I have been to Finnish Lapland 5 times (and done reviews on each of the resorts here on ciao)
firstly Lapland is more than just the whole santa thing - if that's what you want then that's great but some of them are rushed and expensive so shop around, read reviews and do your research
each time we have gone we have gone for a week, self catering in a cabin, this suits our family needs as we like to have space and cater for ourselves - we have gone with inghams and crystal ski, neilsens also go there (crystal ski has now stopped going there)
at each of the resorts you can always book husky, reindeer, santa and snowmobile trips and many more such as ice fishing - your best option is to book your trips with inghams, even if you don't travel with them they are still the cheapest and probably the best so if you do go there with another tour op then hunt down the inghams reps and see what they say as regards to you buying trips from them, there is also great skiing but if you like your 3000 meter peaks don't go to lapland as the highest peak is 718 meters - the skiiing tends to be quiet and the lifts have very few queues even in the height of the season - the lift passes are also reasonably priced too
as regards to the temps in winter it can range from -40 to +5 in a day so you must be repaired for it but the cold is not like the cold in the UK, it's a dry cold and temps of -15 don't feel as cold as -2 in the UK - weird yes it is
The Finnish are typically Scandinavian, they may appear to be rude but they are not, they are just honest and don't beat around the bush, if you ask them if your bum looks big in your ski suit they will tell you the truth so if you don't what to know, don't ask - they don't hold doors open for you, they won't queue (well, some of them don't) or say thank you unless they really mean it but I love that, at least when they say thanks they mean it, they are friendly but not overly, they can also be grumpy then can't we all
food is not really my cuppa, lots of pickled things and reindeer meat, they also love their pizzas - alcohol is expensive so watch your pennies
Lapland is wild, it's a lot of snow and trees and it's flat with lots of frozen lakes, I have not been there in the summer so I can't comment on it then but it is my fav place of all, I love it there, it's wild and free with loads to do, just playing in the snow is just the best and I highly recommend it to everyone - if however, you are the high heels, boob tube and hairspray type of lady then this is not going to be your thing
lapland is where the inner child can come out and play - it's truly a magical experience that I just don't think you can get anywhere else in the world

Review of Lapland (Finland)
Advantages: Lots of fun things to do (santa park, reindeer ride, husky ride, snow mobile) Disadvantages: Inghams could have organised better for snowsuit + boot pick-up & return
