My family live in Larnaka on the south coast of Cyprus. Larnaka is itself home to the largest airport in Cyprus so apart from being about 4 miles from the town centre it is rather convenient. The first thing you may notice is the appaling standard of the driving over there you name it tailgaiting, no indicating and poorly maintained cars. Anyhow, Larnaka itself revolves around the promenade area which stretches about a mile and is peppered with restaurants and bars none of which are particularly unique in their own right and are often full of locals. This not neccessarily a bad thing but the locals are often rude and glare at foreigners as if they are some sort of aliens it can often be unwelcoming but of course this is not always the case. There are some very nice places but out of season the town only comes alive at weekends and is largely dead off season but much the same could be said for Cyprus on the whole. The beach is not welcoming either so it is advisable to venture about a mile west of the main town to Makenzy beach where the sands are golden and the beaches are far more agreeable. The only problem is the flightpath runs over the sealine so every 15 minutes or so a landing aircraft may interrupt the peace. I personally wouldn't recommend Larnaka as a tourist destination for the partying and sun-seeking holidaymaker. Places such as Pafos or Protaras are far better suited to this sort of holiday. Having, said this Larnaka is not without its charms with numerous monuments and aesthetically pleasing unique structures but it is more of a local than tourist place.

This has some very useful observations on the place, but it is "brief" as the title promises. More background info and more detail would, in my view, make it a better review. Duncan

It doesn't sound all that appealing to be honest - under the flightpath and unfriendly locals! Lexy

Advantages: Hot and sunny in the summer, safe clean beaches, good value for money Disadvantages: Can be cold and wet in January and February, little for bored children, not much night-life and water-sports
