We had never really fancied Las Vegas as a holiday destination but last year when we were planning our route for travelling from the UK to Australia we discovered that we could travel out via the States and back via the Far East (going west all the time minimised jet lag too). We decided to spend a few days in LV thereby enabling us to take in the Grand Canyon which we had always wanted to see. Although the bright lights and sound of the slot machines palled after a while I'm glad we did it. Just wandering around the hotels produced some amazing sights - the Sphinx, white tigers, dancing fountains - to name but a few. It was cheap to eat and our hotel (the MGM) even had its own theme park which kept the kids amused. Our big moan was that even in shede temperatures of 106 there were no sun umbrellas at the poolside - presumably the hotel would rather have you indoors gambling than outdoors!
