Where else can you see the Eifel tower and the Statue of Liberty on one street, watch a pirate ship sink outside a hotel, or see a volcano erupting outside another one?

I visited Las Vegas last year, and I can honestly say it took my breath away. From the minute I first saw the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, I was hooked on the place.

This review will be ideal for anyone thinking of going to Las Vegas and wondering what they should try and fit in while they are there. There are a million and one things to do, so hopefully this will give you an idea of what you definately want to see while you are in this fantastic city.

Firstly, we stayed in the Imperial Palace. The main thing this hotel has going for it is its location. It is slap-bang in the middle of the strip, Opposite the wonderful Caeser's Palace. It is a cheaper hotel than some of the others, but it is clean and the staff are friendly, and with the strip being miles and miles long, in the middle is the best place to be.

Some other hotels, like Circus Circus, the Riviera, the Sahara and the Stratosphere also offer cheaper deals, but these are at one end of the strip, (the furthest end from McCarran airport) meaning a long walk or a monorail journey to get to where all the main action is. Although these other hotels are definitly worth a look, especially the stratosphere, I think the Imperial Palace wins hands down on price and location.

One other thing I would add is that where you stay doesn't actually make that much difference, apart from location. All the hotels are like mini-theme parks and are accessible to everyone. We used our hotel for a sleeping, using the pool, and a drink on our way out and on our way home. We also played most of our poker there, but we could have done that if we were staying there or not.

The time difference in Las Vegas from the UK is about 8 hours. Couple this with a 10-hour flight and there is bound to be some jet-lag. We set our watches to Las Vegas time as soon as we arrived, and tried to stay awake as long as possible. But don't worry if you can't. Las Vegas never sleeps. What you can do at 4pm you can usually do at 4am too. So if you need a bit of shut-eye, don't be afraid to take it.

Taxis from McCarren airport are pretty cheap. Ask them and they will drive you down the strip. The airport is about 4 miles from the Strip. You can actually see it when you land. It's a great sight.

Food in Las Vegas is fabulous. Of course, the famous 'Golden M'' is ever present, and we did smaple one Big Mac! Every restaurant we ate in was value for money, even the posh ones in Caeser's Palace, and the food was fabulous, served in huge portions. One restaurant I would recommend for a big blow out is the EPNS sports bar in the New York New York hotel (which is definitly worth a visit, there is a replica New York Street running through the hotel). The portions here are huge and the bar is a must for any sports fan. You sit in little booths facing a wall of tvs showing every sport imaginable. But don't worry, the little booths come with their own tvs which you can switch over to Friends if you are not a sports fan.
Another thing to look for are the all-you-can-eat buffets. They are usually pretty cheap, and you can go back as much as you like to fill your plate. We tended to have one for breakfast, and often found we were so full we didn't need lunch.
There are far too many eateries to go into but each hotel ususally has something to tickle everyone's tastebuds.

So what are the main things you should do on your trip to Las Vegas. To conclude this mini overview I will list the things I found the most breathtaking and interesting, and hopefully these will help you choose what you really want to see:

* GRAND CANYON TRIP: A must. I think it cost us about $150 each. We were picked up from our hotel and driven to McCarren airport. Then we met our helicopter pilot, had some photos taken and climbed aboard. We were flown the 40-odd minutes to the Grand Canyon, flying over Celine Dion's home and the Hoover Dam. The Canyon is truly breathtaking. We landed at the bottom where we had a walk around and were then treated to a champagne lunch. On the flight back we flew down the strip. A fantastic experience and one you shouldn't miss.

* THE BELLAGIO FOUNTIANS: These have to be seen to be believed. The Bellagio is a fabulous italian-style hotel, and one of the top ones in Vegas. The fountians are at the front of the hotel and are activated every 15 minutes. You might not think much of fountains, but believe me, these are something else. They are timed to music and the power behind them is awesome. The Bellagio itself has a wealth of stunning designer shops and a lovely bar to relax in and watch the High Rollers spending their cash at the casino tables.

THE MIRAGE: Home to magicians Seigfried and Roy, famed for their work with wild animals including tigers and elephants. As you enter the Mirage you are met by a white tiger inside a huge enclosure. The Mirage features Seigfried and Roy''s secret garden, which is defintley worth a look. Here you can see white leopards and tigers. It was also home to the pair's much-loved elephant Gilda, who sadly died a few years ago. The most spectacular thing about the Mirage is its erupting volcano outside. Visible from the pavement outside, the volcano 'erupts' every 15-30 minutes, shooting 'lava' into the sky and setting the river surrounding the volcano alight. A fantastic display.

TREASURE ISLAND: You enter the hotel across a wooden bridge, crossing the 'sea' in which are moored two pirate ships. The hotel itself is nice, and houses a lovely mexican restaurant. But it's at night time that the hotel comes to life. Twice nightly people gather on the bridge to watch as pirates aboard one ship and sirens aboard another start a fight. Sparks fly on either side of the bridge before the pirate ship sinks, flinging its crew into the waters. They are forced to swim to the sirens' ship where more battling ensues. It is a fantastic spectacle.

THE VENETIAN: A stunning hotel, based on Venice and complete with a canal which flows outside the hotel and inside too, through a replica of St Marks Square. And on the cana sail beautiful golden gondalas just waiting for you to climb aboard. Inside is peaceful and tranquil. If you are there at about 10am, as we were (I was gazing longingly though the window at some Jimmy Choo shoes) you will see the gondaliers marching through the 'streets' singing their morning song on their way to work. The Venetian also houses Madame Tussauds, but if you have been to the one in London I wouldn't bother with here.

THE LUXOR: One of the most famous sights on the strip, and one of the most stunning. The pyramid shaped building, complete with it's laser light at the pinnacle, is truly an amazing sight. Outside the hotel is a replica of Cleopatra's needle. It is huge. To convey to your friends how big it is take a picutre of you underneath it with your arms outstretched. We have one of these pictures and it still amazes me whenever I see it. Also the famous Sphinx outside the front of the hotel is fabulous. Inside the hotel is luxurious. It also houses an Imax cinema.

CAESER'S PALACE: Possibly my favourite hotel. The shopping is out of this world. The mall goes on forever, and is full of every shop imaginable. There are fantastic restaurants and clubs, and of course there is the famous Pussycat Dolls lounge. I practically had to drag my bloke away from the doorway. We had a fantastic meal here, although I'm sorry but I can't remember the name of the restaurant. We also spent a lot of time in the bar at the casino, taking in the sights, people watching and keeping an eye on the high rollers!

MANDALAY BAY: Didn't get to this hotel sadly. Some of you may know it is where the fight in the new Rocky film was set. This hotel apparantly had its own man-made beach and surf-able sea. Defintley worth a look!

MGM: The MGM has a lovely 'Rainforest' restaurant, which is great for lunch. As you can tell from the name, it has a jungle feel to it, with lots of animals lurking in the trees. Listen out for the thunderstorm, and don't be surprised when the room gets dark and the lights flicker as the storm takes hold. The MGM also has a walkway with a glass roof, where lions walk overhead. When they have baby lion cubs, you can even have your picture with them. They were not there when we visited, but we stood for ages in the walkway as one of the lions was asleep on the glass roof, Being so close was amazing. You can really appreciate their sheer size.

ALADDIN: Another fantastic shopping area. The roof is painted like an Arabian sky, and every so often a storm hits! It's really atmospheric. We ate here in one of the restaurants one evening though and it wasn't one of our better meals. However the setting was stunning.

NEW YORK NEW YORK: I mentioned this earlier on, and it is definitley worth a walk around, dow the New York street. This also has a rollercoaster running around the outside of theh hotel, past the Statue of Liberty.

STRATOSPHERE: If you don't get chance to visit the Canyon, which is criminal if you have gone over from the UK as you are literally just a stones throw from one of the greatest natural sights you will ever see, then you simply have to go to the top of 1,500ft Stratosphere tower.
The view from the top is simply mindblowing. You have a fantastic, panoramic view of Las Vegas and the Freemont Experience, into some of the outer suburbs and down the Strip. You do have to pay for the privilege of riding the superfast life, which takes just 30 seconds to get to the top, but it is well worth it. You can either take in the view from inside, or venture out onto the deck. And for the really brave ones, there are the fairground rides. These look truly awesome, but remember you have to pay for these at the bottom of the tower, so you don't actually get to see what you are letting yourself in for beforehand! These rides are scary! One is shaped like a claw, which hangs and spins you over the edge of the tower, one shoots down the tower, looking like it is about to throw you over the edge, and another one throws you high in the sky, on a huge pole sticking out of the top of the tower. They are not for the faint hearted, nor for those who have just eaten their breakfast!

Remember it is very hot in Las Vegas...you are in the desert after all! We tended to get up as early as we could, have breakfast and go out exploring while it was cooler. We would have lunch and head back to the hotel at 2-3pm for a few hours by the pool, a nap in the hotel and maybe a flutter on the bandits, before heading out again into the night.

Also remember that if you are playing slots, or are chancing your luck on the tables, then your drinks are free! It took us a night or two to realise this, and were spending money in the bar when we could have had drinks for free. You don't have to be spending huge amounts either to do this, a dollar in the slots is plenty. Just remember to tip your waitress.

We picked up a great little city guide from our taxi driver who brought us to our hotel. Make sure you get one as it makes it easier to plan where you are going to eat, drink and visit, although I hope this little overview has been helpful too.
There are hundreds more things I could tell you, but I would be typing for days. If you are visiting there soon I am so very jealous, but I hope lady luck is smiling on you!
