refined and quality service. Lawrences is distiguished as being a welcoming hotel in the unique atmosphere of Sintra, having acquired notoriety in 1809 with Lord Byron´s Stay. Other well known personalities have spent the night at Lawrence´s: Eça de Queirós, Alexandre Herculano and Camilo Castelo Branco.
Advantages: Location, old design! Disadvantages: Foggy during most winter.
...Seteais is part of the amazing set of the Serra de Sintra (Sintra Mountain, in English), not more than 30 km from Lisbon.
For those who don't now this area, Sintra is a very special place. Is the highest mountain (300 m only) near Lisbon and at the same time it's close to Cascais and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean coast. This proximity to the ocean gives to Sintra its only microclimate, foggy and wet, with a mystic touch, no matter what.
That's why Sintra is such an exuberant place, where everything is green and fresh throughout the year. That was also the main reason why Sintra became the place where most nobles and even the Portuguese royal family build their summer houses.
Seteais is on the low part of the mountain, but has an amazing view to the Palácio da Pena on the top, and to all surroundings.

Advantages: Great base Disadvantages: None - this is Barbados...
...St Lawrence Gap is a very lively part of Barbados, often referred to merely as "The Gap", with places like The Ship Inn (Thursday night), the Reggae Lounge (Sunday nights) and plenty of others to amuse you, offering either free admission or a cover charge but reduced priced drinks. St Lawrence Gap is not far from Rockley Beach for water sports, and of course, being on the coast, you can swim in the sea, which is warm all year round (usually a lot cooler in the sea than on land!). There are some great Sports Bars too in Worthing (Bubba's for example) and Dover (ten minutes walk away), and apart from the plethora of beggars and hawkers, St Lawrence Gap is ideal.
A taxi to St Lawrence Gap from Bridgetown is usually around $BD40 and a similar price to the Grantley Adams International Airport. I recommend trying the Roti - like Fajitas...

Advantages: central, great coices, all fresh Disadvantages: couldn't eat as much as I wanted to buy!
...This is going to be short and sweet. St Lawrence's Market is worth a visit, especially if you are a traveler on a budget. The two levels of the indoor market provide a variety of fresh produce and packaged goods. You can even buy crockery and cutlery if you need to!
The piece de resistance for me was the fresh produce. The vendors sell everything from seafood to cuts of meat and kebabs, from fresh vegetables and fruits to cheeses and desserts. There are plenty of choices if you prefer to cook from scratch or whether you're looking for something pre-prepared, quick and easy.
Within walking distance from major bus and train routes, St Lawrence's Market is a must see for sightseers and cooks alike....

INTRODUCTION
I first heard of this book by reading a review of it on Ciao by baby1j2005. I am interested in reading about survival and how people cope with extreme situations. I have read many factual accounts from survivors of the Holocaust of WWII... more
