My mother and me visited Le Coco Beach for a five day holiday. After about an hours transfer from the airport we arrived on the East coast of the island at Le Coco beach hotel where our inital intake was of disappointment because we were hoping for a more authentic Mauritian experience, and arrived at a hotel that reminded us much of disneyland with its over the top colours and patterns you really want to wear sunglasses all the time! If allergic to bright fake atmospheres this hotels is not for you! Although on that note it looks great for kids.
We chose the standard rooms, which have airconditioning ( a blessing in the heat), television and en Suite bathroom. The rooms were brightly coloured with palm trees and colourful mirrors and a great view off the balcony which overlooked the swimming pool and beautiful gardens. The rooms were very clean as were the bedding and towels( nice, big and soft). There are other bigger rooms and the villas are scattered throughout the grounds.
We went in November so it was great weather but did rain a bit but mostly towards the end of the day and never for too long, I must say it can come as a bit of a relief. Days were very hot though and ended up with a heat rash, so all you fair skins don't forget the strong factors.
They offered a good amount of activities ranging from a golf course to watersports. Taking in the 80 acres of land and gardens alone is a sport in itself. There is a kids club making it easy for parents to relax while there kids had fun and from what I could see they had an extensive program during peak season (sorry I can't offer too much info on this as I don't have kids). At night they had a cabaret show with all the mauritian dancers which was good fun. They get everyone up and dancing afterwards and were very friendly, they even invited me to a local disco afterwards, which unfortunately I had to decline as mum wasn't too keen. At night it's great to go for a walk around the grounds as they light up all the big palm trees with little lights and its lovely.
As we took the half board option we ate mainly in the buffet restaurant where the food was average to good. There was plenty to choose from including meats, fish and vegetables. They also had a great dessert table for afters (go on your on holiday!) They didn't run short of food and the staff are quick to fetch anything you want. All the staff were great and very friendly and helpful and would stop and chat to find out how you were and if you needed anything, many remembered our names. There is also an outside bar, which much to the same theme as the hotel has plenty of colour but as its by the pool its great to pop under and have a quick drink.
The pool is a very good size and very clean. Sport wise they have a dive club at the hotel and do lessons in the pool, this was a great experience and they take photos for you to take home (at a fee), apparently the Padi dive club is supposed to be one of the best on the island, there is also an underwater walk on the sea bottom, and many other water activities. there are plenty of other land activities with excursions going into town (port Louis being 50 minutes away and great for shopping) and to the botanical garden( which is a must go especially to see the beautiful water lilies and hear a little bit of history about the island). There is a fair stretch of beach very close to the main hotel and are good to have a laze on, there are also sun beds to lie on. For those of you who prefer to get pampered they do have a beauty parlour which offers great massages and other beauty treatments.
My overall opinion: I would personally not go back soley on the basis that I would want a hotel that had a more authentic and local feel to it. We did have a great time other than the little bit of rain, and service was great. Definetly not a romatic hotel for couples or honeymooners in my opinion but fantastic options for families!
