My brother and I arrived in Amsterdam for the final of Euro 2000. We had not even sorted out a place to stay, however walking around for a while and being offered hotel and hostel rooms by people in the streets, we decided to go into a booking agents. We are so glad we did, within five minutes we had arranged a twin room in Le MeridienApollo for less than £80 between us. Ten or 15 minutes in a taxi and we were there.
Le Meridien Apollo, surrounded by canals and set in a peaceful part of town. It was exactly what we needed after a long day travelling. We went to the desk and were greeted by the friendliest of staff. We stayed in smoking room, but it didn't have that smell you get in other hotels. I sat down exhausted and looked up at the TV. "Welcome Mr Craig" it said on the screen. This is a bit cool, I thought, then I found I could access the internet via an infrared keyboard, check my bill and do all the other things normally associated with a hotel TV system.
My brother and I went out for a walk, had some grub and saw some of the sights that evening. We arrived back early and there was a pair of slippers beside each of our beds, a mint on the pillow, the corner of the sheet pulled back and a notice telling us what the weather would be like the next day.
The room itself was large with two beds a table and two chairs. The bathroom was perfectly clean. Most importantly we were able to have a really good, long, relaxed sleep.
Now for my only complaint - the shower kept changing temperature, it went too hot and then too cold. Thats it, my only complaint, otherwise perfect.

Advantages: Luxurious surroundings, clean room, excellent service, good value. Disadvantages: A bit of a distance from the centre but trams were quick and frequent.
