...I was in Amman for some time with my job and I found it an interesting but also a very strange place!
Getting there: I flew with Royal Jordanian from Heathrow. British Mediterranean also does direct flights. Return flights tend to cost around £300 but if you fly with an airline such as Romanian Airlines via Bucharest you can find flight as low as £200. The flight time is around four and a half hours.
Arrival: I arrived early in the morning into Queen Alia International Airport. Everything was closed and we waited for our visas patiently. Baggage reclaim was better than the UK, quick and easy with an array of porters around to get your bags off the carousal and help you with them. Your bags have to go through another X ray machine as you exit the terminal. The airport is 30 miles south of the city and you can either catch a bus...

Relatively calm, we departed Chicago at 2AM, December 21, 2007.
After a twelve-hour flight, we arrived in Amman, Jordan. We ran to the transit desk, hopeful that our connecting flight was held...

...has been re-categorised recently as posing a serious threat to British nationals. As I explained earlier, the British are - on the whole - welcomed with open arms, but the current situation of instability has spoiled this. This was clearly demonstrated during our visit, where all the locals we came across (including our hosts) were more open and friendly to our English contingent and in fact, the Dutch - who share a similar personality to the English - than with the French, German, Spanish and Italians.
It is a good idea to avoid demonstrations and areas where large crowds are gathering, Palestinian refugee camps and like any big city around the world, take care when visiting downtown areas of Amman.
