Advantages: See where the battle took place, audiovisual presentation, lots of information in the exhibition Disadvantages: Not the atmosphere I was hoping for
...Once again, an op on an 'attraction', rather than the actual town itself.
Culloden, near Inverness, is the site of the last major battle on mainland Britain, in 1746, between the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), and the government forces, led by the Duke of Cumberland, also known as the Bloody Butcher. To be honest, this is not ‘my’ period of history, however, last summer, after reading the Cross Stitch series of books by Diana Gabaldon, I became quite interested in the Jacobite period, and persuaded my long suffering father to drive me to Culloden!

...One of the fastest growing towns in Europe, Inverness is regarded as being the 'Capital of the Highlands'. For Scottish people Inverness makes a welcome change from the big cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. For other visitors Inverness makes an excellent base from which to explore the 'real' Scotland. The real beauty of Inverness lies in the fact that the town services nearly the whole of the Highlands. The town itself is relatively small, which adds to its overall charm. The great thing is that although the town is quite small the huge catchment area means that the range of services available is staggering. There are very few places that have so much facilities on offer within such a small area. Going out for a drink in Inverness is not an experience to be missed. ...clubhouse was opened and the committee were continually making efforts to buy more land to extend the course. Just before the 1914-1918 was broke out, Culcabock had become an 18 hole par 72, measuring 4,912 yards. A well known golf writer of the day said "although scenery is not everything - on the Inverness course, the scenery, like the mountain breezes and pure air, are among the extra's".
In 1924, the land and farm buildings to the north of Culcabock Road were acquired by the club and the redesigned course, resembling the one we play today, incorporating 5 new holes was opened. In 1973 a new clubhouse lounge was opened to cope with the ever increasing demand for better facilities and this remained until the opening of the new clubhouse by HRH Prince Andrew in 1998.
In 1980, the new professional's shop and clubhouse link up were opened...
