Having switched to the small low cost airlines in the past year, I have noticed that they operate often from smaller airports. And a good thing too, in my opinion.
I flew with Jet2 to Amsterdam a couple of weekends ago. Jet2 is the new low cost airline operating out of Leeds Bradford-very welcome to any of us from Yorkshire who have had to go to Liverpool, manchester or Birmingham prior to this.
I'd never visited this airport before and was amazed at how easy it is to get to. It's not far from Leeds or Bradford and is served by a bus from Leeds train station several times a day.
You drive up and park literally just outside the terminal building. There's plenty of short term and long term parking. It's just a step into the terminal building. I would caution people that it's expensive to park at Leeds unless you are long-term parking. My parking cost £12 for the first 24 hours and £10 for each day after that. Considering I was flying low cost this added quite a chunk onto it. Long term parking is £25 for a minimum of 8 days, I think. Cheaper to get a taxi perhaps?
The check in is directly inside the doors-and it's a good thing that it's not set up to take big planes- the check in hall is compact. There's a small WHSmiths in the hall, but not much else. (at arrivals, there is a coffee shop but this shuts by 9pm)
After checking in you can go through to the passport control which is quick and efficient.
Shopping is a bit limited but there is a duty free shop. The signs are confusing saying that you can't buy duty free if you are travelling in the EU...so I didn't bother. Our plane was due to go shortly.
The small lounge is divided into smoking and non smoking but this is useless really becasue the smoke drifts into the non-smoking bit. A screen to keep the smoke in would be appreciated. The seating is fine for a short wait.
There are television screens around the lounge, and a coffee shop and pub that serve drinks. There's also another WHSmiths for your last minute book purchases.
The toilets are few in number but clean.
On departure, you have to walk down stairs to get to the tarmac so that you can get on the plane. Disabled or older travellers might find this to be a disadvantage.
This is a functional airport that is fit for purpose but it would struggle to serve the larger airlines and transatlantic routes. There's everything you might need, but in limited quantities. However, I'd certainly use it again..no more crossing the Pennines for me for a while!
