When I lived in East Yorkshire I was a fairly regular visitor to Leeds, which some Yorkshiremen claim is the “…Capital of the North”. I always enjoyed my visits which usually involved shopping, having tea at the Sri Lankan tea centre and supping a pint or two at a pub. This friendly city certainly is a thriving commercial and industrial place which has a multi-cultural makeup and also is a major cultural and sporting centre.
Shopping wise Leeds rates well. The city, like Cardiff, has some attractive Victorian shopping arcades as well as modern, one-stop shopping complexes. The Coin Exchange with its ornate balustrades, elegant stairways and Victorian décor is a great place to shop in whilst just about every conceivable type of foodstuff can be bought of Kirlegate Market, where there are in excess of 800 traders. Besides that you’ll find sellers of cosmetics leather goods, motor accessories, DIY goods and so much more.
Granary Wharf offers canalside shopping in the historic setting of Leeds waterfront, with the added bonus of fun-filled entertainment by dancers, jugglers and brass bands.
An aspect of Leeds which surprises many visitors is that despite it being a large commercial and industrial city, the City Fathers made sure it was “ Green City” as well .Parks and open spaces such as Woodhouse Moor and Roundhey Park bear testimony to that. In Roundhey Park you will find 700 acres of rolling parkland, lakes and woodlands, there are scented gardens for the blind and the attractive Monet Garden. The Temple Newsam Estate offers formal gardens, a huge park and an impressive Jacobean mansion whilst Middleton Park is another attractive green oasis with its woodland, grassland, and designated Nature Reserve.
The Grand Theatre is a superb venue for the performing arts ranging from opera, ballet, musicals, comedy and pantomine. It often stages West End and Broadway shows and attracts big names in show business. The City Vaneties, a popular place for entertainment since the 18tth century, is one of the last remaining music halls in England. Leeds also houses the world famous Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and international musical concerts are held in the Victorian splendour of Leeds Town Hall.
Sports facilities in Leeds are impressive. Headingley is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Elland Road is the home of Leeds United, whilst there is the Leeds International Swimming Pool. There are also a number of fine golf courses in and around the city.
Leeds makes a very suitable and convenient gateway for tours of some of Yorkshire’s loveliest countryside such as the Yorkshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors and the lovely Vale of York .Stately homes, nearby include the likes of Castle Howard, Harewood House, Newby Hall and Nostell Priory whilst Kirkstall Abbey and Temple Newsom are even closer to home.
There is a plentiful supply of accommodation in and around Leeds include the Crowne Plaza hotel, Le Meridien Queens, Golden Lion Hotel, De Vere Oullton Hotel, Hilton Leeds City, Marriott Leeds, Radisson Sas Hotel and countiess B+B and homely guest houses. You can dine out very well in Leeds. The city has several Michelin starred restaurants such as Pool Court at 42 and Racasse. Other restaurants offering fine dining include Leadis,, Brasserie 44 and Harvey Nichals Fourth Floor. There are Mexican eateries, good Italian restaurants, Thai, Japanese and Indian haunts and a number of first-rate cafe bars. Bar life in Leeds is also lively and the area around the Coin Exchange is replete with good bars.
