The East Midlands city of Leicester has long been a prosperous place with the hosiery, textiles, footwear and engineering industries being of considerable economic importance. This prosperity does at times seem to have bred a degree of complacency in this leafy, well planned city.
Leicester, very much part of Middle England, has attracted large numbers of immigrants, especially Asians from the Indian sub-continent and East Africa and they have added plenty of colour and entrepreneurial skills to the city.
The sports scene in this city is good, there is the home ground of Leicestershire County Cricket Club,Leicester City are a Premier Division side and Leicester RFC are one of England's strongest rugby union sides. The cultural infrastructure is well developed with pride of place going to the Phoenix arts Centre and the Haymarket Theatre.
The city is home to the well rated University of Leicester, where the National Space Centre is being built as a Millennium project, and to the de Montfort University.
The Midlands city is well endowed with good quality hotels,it receives a lot of business visitors, comfortable guest houses and homely bed and breakfast places. I taught for several years at an associate college of Leicester University and one of the great pleasures of my frequent trips to the city, was dining out.For a city of its size,Leicester has numerous good restaurants and,in particular, there are some marvellous Indian restaurants, whose sternest judges are the local Indians themselves.
There are discos and night clubs in town and a number of interesting, congenial, pubs to savour. Whilst Leicester would not rank as a must-see spot for leisure tourists,it is a pleasant enough city for a short visit !

A nice overview of the city, but I feel this would be more of a simple introduction to a potentially much larger review. Maybe a number of linked reviews would be more helpful, each concentrating on an aspect- night life, accommodation, facilities, for example. I think more could be said on the fact that Leicester is very much a City where everything is within walking distance.
