an ancient metropolis that was the first and thus the oldest Phoenician settlement that formed part of what was later known as Tripolitania. The remains of this city are typically Roman. The second century A.D. brought new prosperity when Septimius Severus, who was born in Leptis Magna, became emperor of the Imperium Romanum. At that time monumental buildings were constructed whose beauty and size was only surpassed by those inRome itself. The ruins of the very large Severian Basilica highlight the amazing architectural skills of the master builders of those days. The Forum was also built at the time of Septimius Severus and today it is the most imposing area in the ancient city. Artistic Medusa and Gorgon heads adorn the remains of a restored arcade in the Forum.. The citys Amphitheatre that was once the scene of bloody gladiatorial battles and wildlife savagery, also possesses its own special ambience. Leptis Magna was an important port for the export of wild animals from Africas southern regions, such as elephants, lions and leopards. For many years Leptis Magna was lost to history until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century when it once again revealed much of the magic of its truly glorious past.

Leptis Magna is by far the most amazing historical site i have ever been to. Its is incredibly beautiful, full of detailed history packed away for you to walk on, touch and sit around and enjoy the amazing atmosphere that place has.
I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful place it is to visit. Whether your interested in the history of it, or the natural beauty of it. There is something about this place that gets me so calm, peaceful ... ...reccomendation is to go to Leptis magna, either very early morning, so everything is nice and cool, or to go after 2:00pm during the summer. Summer is the best time in my opinion as you get this special cold breeze from the sea which is right in front of Leptis magna.

I cannot begin to tell you what a wonderful place it is to visit. Whether your interested in the history of it, or the natural beauty of it. There is something about this place that gets me so calm, peaceful and relaxed, a lot more than just a place at the beach!! And im normally not the type of person to ever be interested in history!
There is a special kind of silence in this place. A type i cannot describe in just words. It can never be replecated, its a peaceful silence, not a depressing one.
My reccomendation is to go to Leptis magna, either very early morning, so everything is nice and cool, or to go after 2:00pm during the summer. Summer is the best time in my opinion as you get this special cold breeze from the sea which is right in front of Leptis magna.
Food and drinks arent allowed inside, although you can take water with you. An inside tip is, put any food you want to take, in a purse or very small bag, hidden away from the people at the gate. They prohibit food items as people have been careless in the past. So do make sure you dont leave a mess behind.
Best to take your food packed with you as you never know when the shops around do open. And the tourist shops are expensive.
Leptis magna is a place you can go over and over again. It is so huge. Some people do hire a guide to take them, you may do that one time, but i reccomend going just by yourself, and studying about the place before you go, as you will get to really feel the atmosphere it has.
