It is very easy to get to, about 7/8 hours easy driving from Calais, you can take the Eurostar from London straight to Bourg St Maurice (which is the town at the foot of the mountains, below the three resorts Arc Pierre Blanche, Arc 1800 and Arc 20000 which make up the resort of Les Arcs) or you can fly to either Lyon or Geneva which are both about 3 hours drive from the resorts.
Arc Peirre Blanche is connected to Bourg St Maurice by Funicular Railway or there is a regular bus service to take you to the three high altitude ski resorts.
Arc 1800 is the biggest and busiest and is great for all standards and abilities of skiers, and also families as there is a choice of several kindergartens and kid ski schools. Also, the resort is traffic free, all vehicles having to park on the outskirts. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops, also a good selection of sports shops if you are thinking about treating yourself to some new ski (or snowboard)gear. Prices are about what you would expect of a ski resort.
The lift system was very efficient, with 3 different levels of lift pass available although I was disappointed to find that the lifts don't open until 9.15am when most folk are usually blasting down the mountain in any other resort!! I would recommend you buy a lift pass which gives unlimited use of all lifts in the area, and that way your skiing is not restricted to one particular area. The cost of 6 day full area lift pass is about £110. This also allows you one day skiing in La Plagne, although you have to get your own transport. The only draw back I found was that I did not see a piste basher the whole week which was most disapointing as I like the snow well groomed!
I am not a lover of pommas and t-bars so I was pleased to find that most of the lifts are chairlifts, also with a few gondolas.
There are lots of hire shops but make sure you arrive early as the queues were quite large at most of them by 9am. There are several ski schools also operate from Les Arcs 1800 and I booked a private lesson with the French Ski School ESL for £40 for 2 hours which I thought was very reasonalbe.
For more info on the resort, including webcam pictures, (web cam located at the top of the Transarc gondola at 2600m) visit www.lesarcs.com which I found very helpful with up to date weather reports and lots of details about the resort etc.

I've just read your opinionon on Les Arcs which you wrote some time ago, just one question, how kid friendly is it, for us this is often the major factor we take into account

Nice Opinion, useful to read, but 5 hours from Calais to Bourg? Are you sure, that must be going some. You said its 3 hours from Lyon to the resort and you have to go past Lyon to get to the resort if you travel down from Calais. That means Calais to Lyon in 2 hours, wow can I have your car please.
Everything else useful though. interesting about them not pisting the snow though.
