Advantages: Really beautiful and sad Disadvantages: Minor characters are a little clichéd
Au Revoir, Les Enfants (which I'll leave you to translate for yourselves) is a French film (no surprises there) which won a whole host of awards in 1987, such as the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, a Bafta for Best Director and 7 César Awards (France's Baftas), as well as being nominated for 2 Oscars. However, considering how critically acclaimed this was, it's practically unheard of and difficult to find. It's the debut film by director Louis Malle, and it's based on his own childhood experiences.
The story revolves around a boy named Julien Quentin, who goes to a Catholic boarding school during World War II. When a new boy, Jean Bonnet, arrives, the pair get on well and form a friendship. However, when Jean starts to act strangely, and Julien delves more about Jean's past, he discovers a secret that could tear ...
Advantages: Activies and fun for all ages and tastes! Disadvantages: When rounded up, it can be quite pricey!
The best Holiday Resort I have ever been in Mauritius is The Domaine Les Pailles. As I briefly mentioned in one of my previous reviews, this is a humongous holiday resort which stretches out for miles and miles, and comprises of activities, fun and cuisine for every ages and tastes. But once we got into the road which would take us to the resort, it was as if we'd immediately been shut out of the real world. As one approaches the resort, hill and mountain landscapes arise in welcome. In fact, the resort is nestled among hills, valleys and mountains. The long driveway is ...
Advantages: Excellent direction; very moving Disadvantages: Perhaps a little slow at first
It is January 1944 and Julien Quentin (Gaspard Manesse), a young teenage boy, is reluctantly returning to his Catholic boarding school in rural France. The bed next to his in the dormitory is allocated to a new pupil known as Jean Bonnet (Raphael Fejto). Julien has until then been the brightest student of his class, but Jean provides him with strong competition. Their relationship is initially full of rivalry, but it gradually grows stronger. One night, Julien discovers that Jean is actually a Jew whose real surname is Keppelstein; he is in fact one of three Jewish boys who have been offered a hiding place at the school by Father Jean (Philippe Morier-Genoud), since the school was supposedly immune from searches by the Nazis.
