We have recently returned from the little resort of Anaxos in Lesvos (June 2004). Despite reservations about what the resort was going to be like we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Anaxos itself is fairly quiet - there's just a sprinkling of bars and restaurants on the beachfront. We ate out every night and, aside from one dodgy experience, we didn't have a bad meal. Average cost for a meal with wine was £15 which we all thought was very reasonable. Other places that we have been to seem to have really jumped on the Euro bandwagon. It seems that Lesvos is trying to keep it's prices reasonable. The resort is very much focused towards tourists and relaxation. You can walk along the beach to the next village, Petra, but beware that your feet will almost definitely get wet.
We found all the people that we met to be welcoming, even with the language barrier (couldn't get the hang of that alphabet). It was generally greatly appreciated if you took the time to learn how to say 'hello' or 'good afternoon' etc.
We hired a car for 3 days. I would say that 3 days is plenty to see most of the attractions of the island (unless you like going to a different beach every day). Of note is the Petrified Forest - one of only 5 in the world. The only problem with this attraction is the fact that the forest and the museum are some 40 kilometres away from each other. As the museum explains how the forest came about, I would certainly recommend a visit to the museum (in Sigri) first. We had a trip to the islands capital, Mytilini, too. Unfortunately we went on a Sunday when all the shops were closed, though I think the boys may have planned this to prevent damage to the credit cards.
If you do hire a car, you will have no choice but to follow a mountain road at some point. If you get chance take five minutes to stop at the side of the road and take in the scenery. It is truly awesome. I also watched some of the most breathtaking sunsets that I have ever seen (about 25 of our photos are of said sunsets).
One of the problems that Lesvos is currently experiencing is the fact that some of the major tour operators are pulling out of the resorts in the north, making the villages appear a lot quieter than they have been in the past. I wouldn't have thought this would be the type of holiday that you would enjoy if Faliraki and Ayia Napa are your first choice.

Thanks for this review. I have already booked for Sept 2005 to stay in Petra. Got put off Anaxos because of what was written in the Rough Guide to Greece. No doubt we will visit Anaxos on our travels around the islans

I adore the Greek islands but have never visited this one, i much prefer the quiet unspoilt places, just come back from Skiathos last month, that was gorgeous. Susan xx

Advantages: No mosquitoes on Lesvos, just very nice people at The Olive Press Hotel. Disadvantages: About a 2 hour transfer fron airport to resort, but a great journey.
