We have just returned from a week in Skala Kalloni in Lesvos and wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful place it is! We have a two year old daughter and our list of must haves included either a childrens pool or a safe shallow beach, apartment or hotel withing a 5 minute walk of beach, a couple of shops to buy any provisions we might need, and a selection of tavernas for dinner. We didn't want lots of noisy nightlife!
The transfer from the airport to the resort took about 45 minutes and was well conducted by our rep who told us lots about the island.
Skala Kalloni fitted all of our requirements completely. We stayed at the Arisvi apartments which are bookable through Manos. Our apartment had a bedroom, lounge (which had two put up beds) a small kitchen with 2 ring hob, kettle, fridge and sink, and a shower room. It was clean and typically greek, the owner Christina speaks excellent English and was very helpful. To get to the beach was a doddle as it was literally over the road - less than 30 metres. The beach is sandy and well cared for. You can rent 2 sunbeds and a parasol for 5 euros per day. The water is very warm and very shallow - you need to walk out at least 100 metres before you are out of your depth.
There are several small mini-markets which sell basic food and household supplies. There isn't a pharmacy or a bank but it is only 4 euros in taxi to Kalloni which has every shop you could possibly need, several pharmacies and banks.
The tavernas all sell excellent homemade quality food - the local sardines are fantastic. We liked Ambrosia taverna best and highly recommend their prawn saganaki. All the tavernas cooked a smaller meal for our daughter and hardly charged us anything for it!
The only possible negative comment we could make would be the noise made by the local dogs. Most of them are owned by they wander the town in packs! Saying that they are not all aggressive and didn't beg for food. They did wake us up one night barking!
Overall a fantastic value for money holiday that exceeded our expectations. We would definately return.

Advantages: No mosquitoes on Lesvos, just very nice people at The Olive Press Hotel. Disadvantages: About a 2 hour transfer fron airport to resort, but a great journey.
