I have been on a couple of these walks and did both extremes, the first walk was one that is widely used by tourists, and is pretty easy going. The views across the volcanic mountains are amazing and the constant smell of eucalyptus was a welcome surprise, it also make a kind of bluey haze, well its did when i was there, but it was mid summer. The walk led to a view point, I cant for the life of me remember the name of it ( shame you cant add pics on here) but...wow, even better there was a random local in the middle of nowhere selling sugar cane rum, home made,
The second walk, complete opposite. It was very challenging and while the views are amazing i was more concerned about not falling down some ravine! There were tunnels leading through the face of the mountain which you needed a torch and the ability to walk at a 45 degree angle as apparantly they gave up tunneling when they wwre able to crawl through it in the old days! It led to the most fantastic waterfall where we swam in absolutely freezing mountain water in the pool below the waterfall. I think the englaish translation for this walk was "green cauldron"
I would reccomend going with a guide, Im lucky enough to have family on the island, and one of them is a moutain guide. The weather can change rapidly in the mountains and get very cold. Unless you are an accomplished walker, use a tour company so then can help acertain what walk is suitable for you.
