we had been to yllas for christmas 07 and were desperate to go back, we were lucky to get a great last min deal with inghams in feb 08 which was allocation upon arrival - this time we ended up in levi - were initially were not pleased about this as we longed to go back to yllas which was just such a magical holiday - anyhow - the transfer from kittila was about 15 mins, we got taken to our allocation on arrival accommodation which turned out to be a massive 5 bedroomed log cabin - truely stunning and what a bargain too
levi itself is a town, by UK standards it's a very, very small town but in Finnish lapland standards it's big. The main town itself was about a 10 to 15 min walk from our cabin, the walk to the town was not magical like it was in yllas, it was far more built up and didn't have all the lovely walks in the woods like yllas did either - this was a disappointment to us - the town centre has lots of shops and bars, lots of places to eat, quiet nice and compact but lacked the charm and village feel of yllas, it was also very busy as it was half term so there were lots of cars and people about - not really what we wanted
we skiied for a few days, it has a great place called kidsland where the children really had a magical time playing, you could also sledge down on the main slope which was great fun, we found that there was more to do as regards to eating out etc than there was in yllas but this also hit us hard in the pocket, it was nice to eat out but this did not outweigh the lack of atmos and magical walks
at the time we didn't really think we liked it there, when compairing it to yllas and also I suppose we were trying to recapture that wonderful time we had in yllas at christmas which I think in hindsite was wrong, this was a different holiday and we should have taken it as such
in hindsite it was a good holiday and it levi does have a lot to offer, it has a great ski resort which has a lot to offer for all levels, it has a lot of resturants, shops and bars to go to should you want to, it does not have the village remote feel that yllas has but it still is magical in it;s own way - I think this place is a good bet for families with older children who can go for a burger etc on their own or with friends or for people who want to have more options of eating out etc
however, now that I have been to saariselka I only have eyes for saariselka, which has all the facilities of levi (such as bars etc) but all the charm and nature of yllas - it really has it all
if you want to go to lapland then seriously think about going with the ski companies for a week stay over the shorter santa breaks, you can still book all the santa trips etc when you are there but you are not rushed, not herded around and you have time to take in this wonderful place
