After being berated by Angus about writing on "girly" things I've taken up his suggestion to write on an excellent Novocastrian attraction, "The Centre For Life". I also note that "Donald" wrote the first op on this attraction two days ago, check it out as it's very good, so it's weird that I should choose this now, Great minds obviously think alike.

The website for the place is here:

http://www.centreforlife.co.uk/

It is situated very close to Newcastle's Central Station and has a very large car park close by , so it is very accessible , whatever your transport situation. If you can get to Newcastle you can get here. You can't miss the building itself as it consists of a huge curved roof and looks like something emerging from the ground, you can identify from a way off.

The initial blurb on the web site states that it is:

"A £68 million landmark Millennium project of international status which explores life and how it works is taking shape in Newcastle upon Tyne. It brings together science and biotechnology, research and education, entertainment and ethics on a single site. It is the first time anywhere in the world that all these elements have been brought together in one location."

Which is much better than I could have put it.

The Centre For Life is still not completed but there is a lot to see even now. The timetable of development is as follows:

Bioscience Centre =============================> Now Open
Leisure Retail (There are shops!!) ==================> Now Available
Policy, Ethics & Life Sciences Research Institute (PEALS) > Now Available
Times Square =================================> Now Open
LIFE Interactive World ==========================> Now Open
LIFE Lab Education =============================> Now Open
Institute of Human Genetics =======================> Open 2001

I won't write on all of these because I would just have to scam the information from the web site, which you can do for yourself if you are interested.

The main visitor attraction is the LIFE Interactive World which is open 10-6 during the week and 11-6 on Sundays and costs 6.95 GBP for an adult 4.50 GBP for a child and a family ticket is available for 19.95 GBP. There are many other deals and concessions available which are detailed on the web site.

There are many interactive attractions in the centre but the number one has got to be the "Crazy Motion Ride" which contains a virtual mad taxi journey from St James' Park to the Royal Victoria Infirmary via Leazes park. It really does get you going. I liked it so much I went on twice, although beware if you suffer from any kind of motion sickness.

The rest of the attractions are a little more sedate and include the "River of Life" and "Cell City"

As well as the visitor attraction the Centre For Life is the home to research teams and acts as an educational centre, so school visits are well catered for. The location also means that coaches can drop off passengers at the front door. The centre also has function areas for conferences and banquets which are excellent for works Christmas outings, although you shouldn't eat before taking the "Crazy Motion Ride" otherwise you and your meal may be re acquainted a little faster than you would like.

The Centre For Life is an excellent multi functional visitor attraction for the new Millennium and I'd recommend that you visit it if you are in the vicinity. Check out the web site to get a feel for everything that is in the Centre For Life.
