Wong for the first time

Advantages: Good little mystery, some great acting
Disadvantages: Limited appeal, a bit dated

Mr Wong was called San Francisco?s ?famous Chinese sleuth?. He first appeared in a series of novels written in the mid to late 1930?s by Hugh Wiley and appeared in a magazine called Colliers. They were popular enough amongst the magazines readers that it wasn?t too long before the character was taken up by Monogram, who were looking for the own oriental detective to put onto the movie screens. They wanted someone to compete with Mr Moto and, especially, Charlie Chan two popular screen detectives at the time. In the usual way of the time period they didn?t look for an oriental detective for the part instead picking on Boris Karloff. He soon agreed, seeing the intelligent and suave Chinaman as a promising part. Mr. Wong never had any official capacity in his crime solving endeavours, not even as a Private Detective, but was often asked ...

Review of Mr. Wong Detective (DVD)

The other Mr Wong

Advantages: fun little adventure mystery, Lugosi
Disadvantages: Not much of a mystery to it

The Mysterious Mr. Wong is often confused, and said to be part of, the series of Mr. Wong films starring Boris Karloff made in the 30?s and 40?s by Monogram studios. This film predates the first Mr. Wong (the detective) film by three years and stars another of the major monster/horror stars of the 1940?s? Bela Lugosi. Made in 1935 The Mysterious Mr. Wong is 60 minutes long and is very typical of many of the B movies of that era. B movies were the shorter films put on before the main film during the ?golden? era of cinema. A trip to the cinema back then would consist of a major movie, a b movie, a cartoon and a newsreel as well. No short trip to see one film and then back home again, trips to the cinema took most of the night, especially if you took in a meal as well. B movies were often the proving ground for up and coming stars ...

Review of The Mysterious Mr Wong (Remastered) (DVD)

Lilly Is Not So Luminous, but Her Friends Shine Brightly.

Advantages: Fascinating characters, brilliantly descriptive, leaves you thinking for hours after
Disadvantages: Background setting at the beginning is too long , I almost gave up and missed a fantastic book

I'm quite a fan of the Richard and Judy Book club, and have read some fantastic books I probably wouldn't have had they not been one of their recommendations. Working my way through the 2009 list, I have just finished The Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite by Beatrice Colin. The book tells the story of Lilly Nelly Aphrodite, illegitimate child to a cabaret dancer, born in Berlin at the turn of the twentieth century. Quickly orphaned she is took in by Sister August at a catholic orphanage, where she meets Hanne who will become a life long friend. We follow the struggles Lilly faces as she leaves the orphanage to go into domestic service, through the first world war and the subsequent post war years of the Weimer Republic. As circumstances work against her Lilly is forced to continually reinvent herself, for her own survival leading ...
