Lincoln Cathedral is in Font of you.

Advantages: Beautiful Historic building
Disadvantages: At the top of a steep hill

~~ Lincoln Cathedral ~~

Visiting Lincoln Cathedral was one of the main reasons for this years holiday in Lincolnshire, when I was about 10 yrs of age in Junior School we did a project on Lincoln and one on architecture, tying the two projects together with Lincoln's historic buildings. I was so impressed with Lincoln Cathedral I have always wanted to come back for another visit. My hubby made my year by suggesting Lincolnshire for ...
...architecture can be found in Lincoln Cathedral. Sorry I digressed back to the history of the Cathedral.

It went through some restoration after a fire in 1141 which destroyed some of the roof, causing the timber ceilings to be replaced with stone vaults. After an earthquake in 1185 the Cathedral took on a major refurbishment and virtually doubled in size compared to the original building (ok, it may not be exactly double, I've not measured ... more

The Hunt for Lincoln's Imp.

Advantages: Awesome Architecture, Religious Significance, The Da Vinci Code.
Disadvantages: None

Lincoln Cathedral has dominated the skyline of Lincoln for over 900 years and has survived fire, earthquake and collapsed towers in its lifetime. As it is literally a stones throw from the fantastic Lincoln Castle, it is possible to do both attractions and visit some of Lincoln's shops and bars on a day trip. Lincoln Cathedral was, amazingly, the world's tallest building for a period of 250 years until 1549. Entry to the Cathedral costs £4 with ...
...the Cloister and Chapter House, Lincoln Cathedral is an impressive building. It wasn't always this large though. William the Conqueror decided the cathedral of the diocese should be removed from nr Oxford to Lincoln, where the castle had already been established. The building was consecrated in 1092. That Cathedral was not as long as the present cathedral, and indeed its towers were nowhere near as tall. Fairly early on in its life, a mere 50 years ...

Lincoln's magnificent Cathedral

Advantages: Lots of history
Disadvantages: Admission charges

No visitor to Lincoln can fail to see its Cathedral, which along with Lincoln Castle dominates the town and both of these impressive landmarks can be seen from many miles around. Construction of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, to give it its full title, began in 1092 although it was not until 1311 that it was completed. At that time it was not only the tallest building in Britain but the tallest building in the world ...
...(83 metres) high. In fact Lincoln Cathedral has seen its fair share of disasters and has also survived an earthquake and a serious fire. Lincoln Cathedral is located right in the centre of the historic town and is not really something that you would struggle to find as it is well sign-posted from the corner of all of the narrow, cobbled streets. I visited Lincoln Cathedral at the beginning of December 2007. My main reason for visiting Lincoln was ...

The White Hart, Lincoln

Advantages: Good setting, salubrious interior
Disadvantages: expensive, poor service

Despite living in Lincoln, I have only the one experience of the White Hart. My cricket club had it's annual presentation dinner there last year. Location Set in the beautiful, historic uphill Bailgate area in the city centre, The White Hart is in the shadow of the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. This means it is in the upmarket area of the city, meaning that the prices are higher than if it were elsewhere in the city. Prices It has to be said that the prices are high. We paid £27 for the ticket and this included a 3 course meal and nothing else. At the bar before I bought a round of drinks (two pints of lager and a large glass of white) and it came to a shade over £10. This, to me is quite expensive. Food The food was not the highest quality - indeed for the price we paid it was distinctly below average. The starter ...

Review of The White Hart, Lincoln

My birthplace and a slice of Roman history

Advantages: lots of history, plenty to see, a nice small town feel to it
Disadvantages: no huge concert venues

Lincoln is a beautiful city. I was born there and lived there for years, but although I have left there, I still think of it as home. Every time I enter the city and see the famous and beautiful Lincoln Cathedral on top of the hill, I feel emotional. It is not a very big city - I believe it had a population of around 80,000 the last time I looked. It has quite a village feel about it, as people often know each other. It doesn't feel like a 'city' in this respect. It is also quite a safe place to live, with crime being apparently less than most other cities. The historical parts of the city are the most famous, with the castle and cathedral the most popular attractions. Don't forget to look for the famous Lincoln Imp when you visit the cathedral ! Steep Hill is aptly named, so take it easy going up there, but it is worth ...

Review of Lincoln in General

Lincoln - A Nice City

Advantages: Lovely buildings. Good shopping. History
Disadvantages: A bit isolated

I have been to Lincoln on four occasions three times on leisure trips from East Yorkshire and once on a business trip and must say I find it a very pleasant city. It is neither too big,nor is is it too small. In short what I am implying is that it is close to being an ideal size. Lincoln has a lot more attractions to visit than is often pre-supposed. Most people know that its Cathedral is famous. It certainly is an awe inspiring building and one of the most beautiful in England. Building work commenced back in the 11 th century but it was largely rebuilt in the 12th and 13 th Centuries in English Gothic style. Sharing the hilltop setting with Lincoln Cathedral is Lincoln Castle. It was constructed on the site of an old Roman fortress. There is a prison chapel with strange coffin like pews and visitors, can,if they so wish ...
