DATA Lisboa is a city formed of valleys and hills (7 hills) that look over the Tejo River. Capital city of Portugal localized in the right side of Tejo river, 38º 42´30,5´´ of latitude N and at 9º of longitude from Greewich hight between 6 m e 226 m (Monsanto). Lisboa has an area of 84 Km2 and a population of 556 797 inhabitants (2001, oficial data).
HISTORY (short note) Lisboa, originally named by the roman empire as "Olissipo", was conquered by D afonso Henriques (first Portugueses King) from the Moorish in the year of 1147 and in the year of 1256 was set as the kingdomcapital. In the year of 1755 there was a big earthquake, and a big part of the city was destroyed, then Marquês de Pombal took the control of the country and made the decisions that changed the architecture of Lisboa's downtown (Baixa Pombalina); from that date the "Baixa" was a square designed blocks with two main plaza's, Rossio (Praça D. Pedro V and Praça dos Restauradores). In the late 19th century Av. da Liberdade was opened, expanding the city far from the river. (by curiosity, Av da Liberdade starts in Praça dos Restauradores and ends at Praça do Marquês de Pombal). In 1998 Lisbon hosted the World Oceans Exhibit (Expo 98), that rehabilitated the oriental area of the city.

Visting lisbon with public transports To visit Lisbon with public transports, please avoid the touristic Bus or the touristic electrics, the best way to meet the city his with regular public transports, locals are always available to talk to you and to give you extra info either in english or in French. You can search for the 4 Funiculars / Elevator that there are in the city specially the Santa Justa Elevator placed downtown at "Baixa". It will cost you 1 BUC ticket up and another one down (that's 1,40€). But when at the top you can have a wonderfull sight from "Baixa" and the Tejo river, take a simple coffee (very good in Portugal)(we call it just "café" or "Bica") and with that you can seat and enjoy the view... you can go up from baixa to Praça dos Restauradores and take the funicular (locally called "Elevador") from Restauradores to Bairro Alto (that's "Elevador da Glória) at the top turn on right to garden of "São Pedro de Alcântara" and enjoy the view to "Castelo de São Jorge" and "Baixa" area. when the night comes you can have lots of fun at "Bairro Alto", restaurants and Bars are many and you may choose from different prices, you can also look for restaurants with live singed "FADO" the typical portuguese song style (specially for Lisboa and Coimbra).
Back to the public transports you can look at Carris web site, for the electric 28 (an old electric) that goes from Martim Moniz to Campo de Ourique (Prazeres), it´s a very good journey and if you are in Rossio you can take the bus 9 to Campo de Ourique and at the end you'll have the 28's electric stop, from there will take you about 40 minutes to Martim Moniz and on the way you'll see a lot from the old Lisboa, including a bit of Bairro Alto, Mouraria, and the Castelo de São Jorge area (if you have a one day ticket you can leave there and go to the "Castelo" - Great sightseeing place).
You can also go by electric (but this time a modern one) from "Praça da Figueira"(this "Praça" stays at the back of Rossio) to "Belém" the electric number is the 15. Once in Belém you have 4 places that you must see: "Mosteiro dos Jerónimos", "Torre de Belém", "Padrão dos Descobrimentos"(please remember to go to the top of it, there's a elevator inside) and CCB - Lisbon's Cultural Center where you can see lot's of exhibitions and shows (www.ccb.pt), and you must taste the "Pasteis de Nata" at "Pasteis de Belém" a house founded at 1837(www.pasteisdebelem.pt).

Advantages: Plenty to see, good food, the trams, nice people Disadvantages: Can't think of any, unless you count having a really odd-sounding language!
