Small Objects of Desire - the Old Tart House
Review of Antiga Casa de Pastéis de Belém by koshkha

Advantages: The best custard tarts in the world
Disadvantages: I don't live next door

...be a trip to the Antiga Casa de Pasteis de Belem - or, to translate roughly, the Old Tart House of Belem. As we drove back and forth she would point out of the window at an unprepossessing little shop with a blue and white awning and a very long queue outside and murmur in hushed tones about the delights still to come. So Where is This Remarkable Shop? **************************** Belem is the river-side area at the heart of the tourist map of ...
...within sniffing distance of the Antiga Casa. Take Care ******** Crossing the road in front of the shop whilst thinking about tarts could be dangerous to your health. The traffic is shocking and you will need your wits about you. The Casa Itself ************* The building is a rabbit warren of rooms, mostly tiled in traditional Lisbon blue and white. There must be a dozen different rooms, each filled to bursting with little tables and chairs ... Read review

The best quality/price relation in Lisbon
Review of Restaurant Nilo in Lisbon by Pepe41

Advantages: The food, the premises, the relation quality/price
Disadvantages: none

We went to this discreet restaurant with terrace, taken by friends of Lisbon and… that differentiates! We ate in several restaurants in the previous days, some of them also in "baixa of Lisbon" and in "bairro alto"… we were disillusioned with the portuguese gastronomy… But the restaurant Nilo, located in the charmer "baixa of Lisbon" (Rua dos correeiros n.ºs 217-219; telephone: 213427810), near the beautiful "Rossio" and "Praça da Figueira", in a ...
...of the others for having delicious Portuguese typical food with fresh and quality products to prices very in account, with an honest and effective service. They have delightful portuguese food from all regions of Portugal: codfish, Algarve´s style fried pork meat with shrimps, veal filets with Oporto wine, grilled fresh fish and beefsteaks. And very important!!! It is one of the few restaurants in Lisbon in which we were not robbed in the couvert ... Read review

Chicken, Chips and Legends
Review of Bonjardim by Jasonrow

Advantages: Cheap - if you like chicken
Disadvantages: Not so good if you dont

Down a little side street off the Avinida De Liberdade stands a little run down building that just happens to serve the best Chicken and Chips in Lisbon if not Europe. From looking at it you would think theres no way I'm eating in there. Be advenurous and you will discover one of Lisbons hidden gems. I found it when working on cruise ships. You can tell if anyone is a career sailor by asking them if they know Bom Jardim. Many a happy lunch have I ...
...Mateus wine at £4.00 a bottle. Legend has it that many years ago a woman was dining on the first floor and could'nt pay her bill. She negated this minor oversite by leaping out the window and disapearing in to the crowds. From then on, anyone who jumps out the window is let of their bill. Unfortunately in the great tradition of legends, it is untrue. During a particularly rowdy session of Mateus drinking, a friend of mine, an ex parachute regiment ... Read review

A night to remember!
Review of Salsa Latina by indiancutie

Advantages: Easy to find, drinks reasonably priced, real latin atmosphere, great live band and genuine mixed crowd into real salsa music
Disadvantages: played a little too much merengue and had a strange ticket system to buy drinks

...of you new to the Salsa scene, it is a latin style of dancing. A mixture of different steps such as the Mambo, Rumba and African dance, salsa is very much a street dance. It originated in Cuba. Like many partner dances, the male partner leads the dance. At salsa venues, the atmosphere is relaxed and usually there are more women then men. Well, it was midweek and I was in Lisbon staying at the Le Meridien, a 'working holiday' so to speak. So far, ...
...just any nightlife, but the salsa scene. Was there one? The hotel reception was very helpful recommending a club called Salsa Latina. I expected some back street danger zone, but as the 5 star hotel had recommended it I thought I would give it a try. The club was a short taxi ride from the hotel (the taxi fares are so cheap compared to the UK!). There were two nice looking latin bouncers on the door, very suave. I climbed up the wooden stairs and ... Read review

The good life
Review of Trindade by Andy_W

Advantages: relaxed food the way it ought to be
Disadvantages: it's too far from London to make it for dinner!

...to 20-B Rua Nova da Trindade and pay homage at the 'Cervejaria da Trindade'. No, it's not really a restaurant, I guess, but it doesn't fit any other category. A cerveijaria is an alehouse, but this isn't a pub nor is it a bar in the Portuguese sense. To be technical, I'm told that it's a microbrewery - but I've only ever drunk ice-cold Sagres there. BUT, the one thing for which cerveijarias are famous is good, easy, comfortable FOOD. So, what's ...
...the size of a barn with Potuguese 'azulejo' tiles decorating the walls. Find one of the many tables and when your attentive waiter comes by, be hopeful that he speaks English .... but if not order 'um imperial' (oonimperiahl), 20 centilitres of cold beer to be going on with. So, what to eat? Ah, there's the rub! - Do you feel flush? If so try the Marisco (seafood), grilled prawns, fresh crab.... but at a price. If not, try a Bitoque, a small steak ... Read review
