Public transport in most Latin countries can be said to be tardy at best. However since Lisbon hosted expo 99 there can be noo doubt that there has been a drastic improvement in the public transport system in the city. Lisbon has four modes of transport these are taxis, buses, trams and an underground train system. The taxis in the city are plentiful, and relatively inexpensive in comparison to those in other major cities in Europe. As Lisbon is not the biggest of cities there will be no problems for the driver, many of whom speak passable english, to drive you the whole way across town. If you do intiate conversation expect a running commentary however on local sights, politics and the ups and down of his football team. Buses again are reasonably cheap and the service has been increased and in the last few years thanks to the takeover by stage cach has had new buses with air conditioning fitted. Travelling by bus can a good way to get to see the city, but be prepared to play sardines come rush hour. The tram system of Lisbon is pituresque however do not be fooled by this appearance, trams are seen by many of those who live in Lisbon as an essential mode of transport, they are extremely cheap but their routes are often very short. But they can be a useful way of getting to the top of one of Lisbons many hills. the underground system first built 30 years ago in Lisbon for along time ha donly to lines but in 1998 a third line was built giving access by undergound to the whole of the city. The cost of any journey within central Lisbon is 100 escudos and the trains are relatively safe as they are always patrolled by the police. travelling by public transport is without a doubt an experience which should not be missed.
