Bars in Portugal though similair to those in many other Latin countries, in the sense that some of the smaller ones are extremely dingy and often inhabited by old men, are often descried as unique especially some in Lisbon have to be some of the best in Europe. The growth in a more independent youth in Portugal and mainly Lisbon over the last 10 years has meant that the youth have been catching up very quickly with their contempories in London and New York. Many bars in Portugal will now have top resident DJ and the dress code will normally be cool or trendy rather than formal, unlike the bars in London and New York whatever they may claim, no where else except for Lisbon can such an array of health damaging alcholic fluids be found, many imported from Portugals former colonies in the far east and Africa. Absynthe is a very common drink but you ar elikey to only find Portugese beers in any bar in Lisbon. The best area in Lisbon to go out drinking is Bairro Alto (the high level or high bar), in one of the oldest and most historic quarters of the city, here you will find every bar under the sun and the streets will be full of people untill at least 4 in the morning, this really is the place to party. However one word of warning is that Bairro Alto is situated next to Lisbons old shanty towns and it's medival maze like quality means that at times some of the streets can become quite dodgy and it is not income for sporadic fights to break out. Another good place to drink is the Docas (the docks) here again you will find a multitude of bars facing out into Lisbns harbour, it is not only incredibly fun but pituresque as well. About 30 minutes away from the centre of Lisbon is Cascais, this is where much of the expatriate youth can be found and the bars are crammed with British, American and German youths. Bars to visit here are the British pubBeefeater (where you can buy a pint of british lager) as well as Bar 24 and Tosca Tasca. Again the atmosphere is friendly and there is a wide mix of people. Anyone who enjoys drinking or simply being sociable will be unable to stop themselves from enjoying the bars of Lisbon. Another good thing is that in the great Portugese tradition many bars will sell Bica's, small expressos, the whole night long.
