The mists of the morning cling to hills and form little mystic rivers in the valleys below. The craggy rocks stand proud as if saying "Legend lives on and cannot be destroyed". This is the land of the Corrigans, shapeshifting imps that protect treasures from bygone days.
Down the valley, the lush green forests look immense, and the sound of the river below can clearly be heard, almost echoeing through hills that have seen the changes of the seasons, and the solidity that makes them a part of who we, as human beings, are.
Here hidden away from those who do not seek are the Liscuis (pronounced lisquisse), and these are stone fomations from another time, covered alleyways of history, upright stones with a protecting stone above them, burial grounds from other ages that make you stop in your tracks and realise how very little a human being is in the order of things, though how honoured you are to be in the presence of such splendour.
From the Liscuis, you can look down into the valley towards the Abbey of Bon Repos, and once a year they have a celebration of light and sound, and all the fireworks, the pomp and the circumstance can be seen from the very hill where stands the liscuis, and where live the Corrigans.
If you ever have a chance to visit this part of the world, then it will astound you. It's beauty is beyond belief. Early mornings, the mists rise and within a space of around an hour, the scene is transformed from dusk to daylight.
Often, I sit on a rock at the top of the valley, where they have carved out over the years a pathway for walkers and I feel nearer to God there than I used to on Dartmoor many moons ago. The vastness, the silence punctuated with the sounds from the river, and the eerie sound of crickets comes to life when the sun shines and illuminates all the Heathers, and wild flowers that grow in abundance, each week changing the scenery to produce a different though equally impressive vision of nature.
I am honoured to be able to share it with you, and to say that the Liscuis is at the top of my garden in the centre of Brittany, and can be approached by a pathway on the road between Bon Repos and Laniscat. For an uphill struggle to the sites that matter, this would be the way to climb but the climb is well worth it. For a downhill run, take the road a little further and approach from the Laniscat end and your walk is all downhill, though I cannot believe that anyone could simply walk and not be drawn in by the treasure that the Corrigans protect and stop, inhale the wonderfully fresh air, and the splendour of a scene I cannot compare with anything that I have ever seen in my life.
Signposts show maps of the routes that the walker can take, although here, I cheat, cross my garden, take the huge slopes, watch the rabbits at play, and absorb the view, the beauty, the completeness of this extraordinary place. Free access for everyone on foot. Unfortunately not suitable for handicapped people. The climb is too steep, although I hope those that share my review that can never go there take joy from the pictures of this place that I love.
