I travelled to Singapore in September and having worked in the travel industry for the past 4 years had done a lot of research on exactly what I wanted to get from my holiday.
Little India is a small area of Singapore where the streets have market stalls, small grocers stores and temples, basically it feels like you are in India as you walk around. After studying a tourism map of Singapore I thought it would be great to spend an afternoon walking through little India and learning about their culture.
Through the streets were music stores with traditional hand made instruments, and gorgeous clothing stores that made outfits from scratch with your design and your choice of material it was lovely.. that was until we went to the indoor market and we got absolutely harrassed, each market stall wanted you to buy from them to come in and place an order for a traditional Indian dress or kimono or buy a sita after sepnding over 30minutes in one particular stall and explaining that I simply did not want to purchase any goods as I did not have any money one me I was still struggling to shake off the market sellers. I am not confident enought to actually say to someone I have no interest as I did not want to appear rude but it seems very much that you have to say this in order to get around to your sightseeing or you will be stuck for hours at a time being pushed into purchasing something you really do not want.
That however is my only complaint about little india the aromas and items that are for sale are absolutely divine and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to see such a place and should I return, I know exactly what I am in for and how to deal with it a bit better.
If you are planning a trip to Singapore Little India is a must and there is so much to see in such a small area, the temples are out of this world and it was a pleasure to be able to visit them and see such a site in Singapore.
Advantages: Exotic.Good shopping. Cheap and tasty foos. Disadvantages: The aroma can be a bit over powering.
The "LittleIndia" ethnic quarter of Singapore spreads out from both sides of Serangoon Road. Actually early Indian migrants resided in Chulia street near Chinatown but then moved to the present place due to the introduction of cattle rearing on the fertile land of Rochor River.
Perhaps the best time to visit this area is early morning. then you can take in the spicy aromas, the colourful traditions, the strains of sitar music and view the elabourate temples.
This fascinating area is great for shopping! There is an astounding array of small businesses such as astrologers and fortune tellers, flower sellers, gem stores, spice traders, sari stores, Ayurvedic medicine sellers and textile shops.
Apart from sightseeing and shopping what else can you do ? Well you can sample the exotic food, much of which you can get for under S$5 per person ...
Advantages: Exotic, Full of Colour. Cheap Disadvantages: Noisy. Smells can be over pouring
A very interesting product that you will find in Singapore's LittleIndia are the flowers and garlands sold in the flower shops.
To get there you have to travel to Campbell Lane, just off Serangoon Road ,and turn right. The shops are vividly colourful, usually painted pink, which symbolises good fortune,or green, symbolic of spring.
Flowers play an important role in the way of life of the Indian community-they are a symbol of prosperity. It is great fun to see the garland makers briskly weave their red, yellow and white flower creations from such as roses, marigolds and jasmine, the flower of happinesss. On Tuesdays and fridays, the Hindu holy days, gods are honoured with simple strands of jasmine. However,on religiously important days more elabourate strands are prepared and you can watch devotees placing garlands on the dieties in ...
