Flowers play an important role in the way of life of the Indian community-they are a symbol of prosperity. It is great fun to see the garland makers briskly weave their red, yellow and white flower creations from such as roses, marigolds and jasmine, the flower of happinesss. On Tuesdays and fridays, the Hindu holy days, gods are honoured with simple strands of jasmine. However,on religiously important days more elabourate strands are prepared and you can watch devotees placing garlands on the dieties in the temple. If you do visit Little India it is quite common to see Indian ladies wearing garlands in their hair.

Advantages: Great food, shopping, atmosphere Disadvantages: Noisy, crowded some days
Try to avoid Little India on Sundays. This is because the whole area is filled with construction workers on their one day off. It is seriously crowded and you'll end up fighting your way through the crowds rather than looking at the shops / temples / food etc.
Having said that, if you're going to go, make it a Friday, which is bryani day in the restaurants. I can recommend Anand Bhavan on Serangoon Road for this. It's vegetarian, but it's authentic ... ...illustration of the difference between Little India and UK prices, my wife and I bought our wedding rings on Serangoon Road - 24 carat gold or £70 for both (i.e. £35 each). Imagine how much they would be in, say, London. As the gold is soft-ish, they sometimes go out of shape a little, but we take them back to the shop and they fix them for free.
On a less consumerist slant, there are plenty of ayurvedic shops and indian head massage outlets, several ...

Little India is a must to visit. Cheap and convenience transportation will be the MRT(Train) juz like the subway station in UK. Pay less than $3(Sing dollars) for your transportation. There are 2 stations which you can alight, Farrer Park station or either Little India station.

Advantages: Traditional Indian Ingredients, Clothing Stores,Allows you to experience a piece of India Disadvantages: Pushy sellers, pressurised environment,
I travelled to Singapore in September and having worked in the travel industry for the past 4 years had done a lot of research on exactly what I wanted to get from my holiday.
LittleIndia is a small area of Singapore where the streets have market stalls, small grocers stores and temples, basically it feels like you are in India as you walk around. After studying a tourism map of Singapore I thought it would be great to spend an afternoon walking through littleIndia and learning about their culture.
Through the streets were music stores with traditional hand made instruments, and gorgeous clothing stores that made outfits from scratch with your design and your choice of material it was lovely.. that was until we went to the indoor market and we got absolutely harrassed, each market stall wanted you to buy from them to come in ...
Advantages: Very clean environment. Efficient.Good shopping. Disadvantages: High degree of social control.
I know Singapore very well since I was born in the Southern Malaysian town of Johore Bahru, which is just a hop across the causeway which separates Malaysia and the Island Republic.
There is no doubt that Singapore's urban environment is impressive - it is a sqeaky clean place,no litter to be seen, even the chewing of gum is banned here.Possessing such a clean environment has meant a high degree of social control.
It is an efficiently run Island city state which offers a lot of sights for the visitor to explore. Firstly, there is the opportunity to "shop til you drop" in the numerous one stop shopping complexes in the Orchard Road tourist belt. You can shop for exotic items in the likes of "LittleIndia",great for silks, saris, textiles, spices and brassware, Chinatown and Arab Street, all these ethnic enclaves are well worth a visit ...

Advantages: cheap, charming, central Disadvantages: busy road, one whiffy room
restaurant at the hotel but you are very close to Bugis Junction which has all sorts of eating places. We ended up in MacDonalds a lot because we could never get a table for 4 in the food court in the basement - it was very busy the whole time. Bugis Junction, being trendy, is a bit pricey, but it has everything you need, eg cashpoints and the MRT access.
If you go through Bugis Junction and out the other side, and cross the road, you are then into the Arab Street Market. A bit sleazy but interesting to look round, and a good place to buy cheap teeshirts.
You are also within walking distance of LittleIndia, and various other tourist sites. Well, most places in Singapore are within walking distance if you walk for long enough!!
