The "Little India" ethnic quarter of Singapore spreads out from both sides of Serangoon Road. Actually early Indian migrants resided in Chulia street near Chinatown but then moved to the present place due to the introduction of cattle rearing on the fertile land of Rochor River. Perhaps the best time to visit this area is early morning. then you can take in the spicy aromas, the colourful traditions, the strains of sitar music and view the elabourate temples. This fascinating area is great for shopping! There is an astounding array of small businesses such as astrologers and fortune tellers, flower sellers, gem stores, spice traders, sari stores, Ayurvedic medicine sellers and textile shops. Apart from sightseeing and shopping what else can you do ? Well you can sample the exotic food, much of which you can get for under S$5 per person. At Upper Dickson Road, there are several highly rated vegetarian restaurants - try the likes of vegetable and pulse curries with white or saffron flvoured rice. At New Woodlands restaurant diners can view food being prepared in an open kitchen and savour such interesting specialities as Rocket Dosai and Thairu Vada. Not far away is an Indian fast food joint called Komalas. You can also sample Indian Muslim food at the open fronted coffee shops. Try the tasty prata - that's a crisp-crunchy pancake. There you have it - a round up of a few attractions in Singapore's Little India.
