Try to avoid Little India on Sundays. This is because the whole area is filled with construction workers on their one day off. It is seriously crowded and you'll end up fighting your way through the crowds rather than looking at the shops / temples / food etc.
Having said that, if you're going to go, make it a Friday, which is bryani day in the restaurants. I can recommend Anand Bhavan on Serangoon Road for this. It's vegetarian, but it's authentic food and unlike anything you'll get in the UK.
Samsuddins is a huge department store that sells just about anything and is open 24 hours. Again, avoid on a Sunday. The jewellery shops sell excellent quality gold (usually at least 22 carat) for much, much less than you'll pay in the UK. As an illustration of the difference between Little India and UK prices, my wife and I bought our wedding rings on Serangoon Road - 24 carat gold or £70 for both (i.e. £35 each). Imagine how much they would be in, say, London. As the gold is soft-ish, they sometimes go out of shape a little, but we take them back to the shop and they fix them for free.
On a less consumerist slant, there are plenty of ayurvedic shops and indian head massage outlets, several traditional hindu temples and restaurants (vegetarian and non-veg).
However, it's close to a red light area, so be careful when going there at night.
Overall, it's fantastic, especially for packet ingredients to bring back and cook with.
