I used to work in a Loch Fyne restaurant after graduating from university but have not been inside one of their restaurants for about 8 years so I wasn't sure what to expect. We were recommended to try this restaurant as we were in York that day and it was a good choice.

The restaurant itself is on Walmgate and overlooks the river. We found it quite easily bearing in mind we haven't been there before. The building was light and cool with high ceilings and polished wood floors - its hard to get fish out of carpet - and the ambience was laid back and friendly. We were greeted promptly by a waitress and taken to a table in the middle of the room. Bread and butter was served and it was nice to see that it was fresh bread which had been sliced.

The menus were quite simple and was a long sheet of paper with the dishes listed on it. There is plenty to choose from but not much if you are not a fan of seafood. The prices were reasonable - around £5 - £7 for a starter and main meals cost between £8 - £12. Seafood platters were more expensive but they were for sharing rather than for one person to eat themselves! There was a set menu for two courses for £12 which was a good deal bearing in mind the cost of starters and mains and there were four starters and four main meals to choose from. Each main course was also served with a side order.

I started off with the pate which I think was made from makeral. I was given two slices but I find they never serve enough bread with it. I requested more bread and was given a generous portion which I was pleased about.

For a main meal I had a mackeral fillet which was served with cherry tomatoes and olives. I really enjoyed this dish but my boyfriend had the plaice with garlic butter and this was so much tastier than mine! The plaice was light and full of flavour and was served whole.

We had side orders of seasonal vegetables which were cauliflower, baby carrots and broccoli and these were served with a little butter and the chips appeared to be handmade and were chunky!

We didn't have room for dessert but these were written on boards and cost around £4.95 per portion.

Standards were already high when I worked in a Loch Fyne restaurant and it appears these have been maintained. The staff were prompt and polite and service was good. The ambience was very relaxed and the decor was low key but fitting for a fish restaurant. The food itself was nicely cooked and presented well.

The Loch Fyne restaurant in York is lovely and if you are in York and have to opportunity to go then this is highly recommended.
