Finland's scariest town?

Advantages: Limestone mines, Opus K pub, the lake, walking trails
Disadvantages: Very frightening people, nowhere to eat on Sundays

On the final leg of our Estonia/Finland travels in September 2007 we needed to find somewhere to spend our final two nights travelling before we arrived back in Helsinki prior to our return home. We wanted somewhere roughly midway between Turku and Helsinki with a bed and breakfast or hotel, somewhere to eat and something interesting to do or see. Only one of the places we identified on our map as being likely also appeared in our Lonely Planet guide ...
...arrived in the town soaking wet on Saturday lunchtime and squelched our way to Matkakoti Linnakangas, described in Lonely Planet as a 'comfortable and well-equipped guesthouse' with 'a variety of homely rooms with fridge, TV and toilet'. After a minute or two standing on the doorstep absorbing more rain, the proprietor appeared and in what seemed an unnecessarily long period of time, gave us a twin room with en suite bathroom. Subterranean scenery

Advantages: Surprisingly interesting, one of Lohja's few visitor attractions
Disadvantages: Gets cold, not for people who are claustrophobic, limited opening

"We've come on holiday by mistake" Withnail and I, Handmade Films, 1987 Don't get me wrong. I had a great holiday this September in Finland and Estonia but it could have been better with a little advance planning. The trouble is I prefer to make as few plans as possible and see what opportunities present themselves at the time. Sometimes this means you do end up somewhere just because it's a convenient place to break a longer journey, quite often you find yourself wondering how you got there. Lohja is a pleasant enough town situated to the north of a huge lake. To the north of the centre there are forests with walking trails and when we were there the woods were filled with the aroma of wild mushrooms. The lake also attracts walkers and the scenery is beautiful but what I did not realize at the time is that deep below the lake ...
