I returned from a holiday in the Loire Valley with my friends a few weeks ago. Our primary reason for visiting France - apart from it being an extremely cheap holiday was to have a trip (or two) wine tasting around the chateaux's of the Loire Valley.
We thought it would be difficult to get them to hand over their wine without paying a penny, but we couldn't have been more wrong. They welcomed us with open arms plying us with free wine - be warned, they do like you to buy a bottle or two in return. But at an average price of £2.50 per bottle who can say no??
The French were very helpful in directing you to the next chateaux, where you could sit and sample this wonderful drink. Also in the region, there is a tourist trail for you to follow, it takes you all around the vineyards and wine tasting houses. Some of the people we encountered did not speak English too good, so don't forget your phrase book, others though spoke excellent Eniglish. We all learned a great deal about the different grapes used in making wine the different fermentation processes, what makes a good wine, and what doesn't.
I would throughly recommend a trip to France. This is the second yar running that my boyfriend and I have been to France - we went Champagne tasting last year - another great holiday, and vastly cheaper than buying it inthe UK - and a lot nicer.
Take a look at a brochure called 'Country Cottages in France' the gites/villas/cottages vary greatly in price, but you can get some really cheap holidays. Last year we paid £75.00pp for 1 week in Chapagne and the cottage was spectacular. This year we paid £168.00 pp (this time we had a private swimming pool).
Au reviour. Bon Vacance. (excuse any spelling mistakes)
