Forget London Zoo!
Advantages: friendly, loads of animals, good cafe, free Disadvantages: Not near a tube station, need to check the tube trains due to engineering works
Welcome to my review of Surrey Docks City Farm, London! This is one of serveral city farms one can find around London and it is possibly one of my favourites... The farm itself is built upon part of the old London Docks along Rotherhithe Street in Rotherhithe, SE16 and can be found here: http://tiny.cc/pyk2Y (Just Cut and Paste into a new browser window). To get there you will need to take a tube to Canada Water (Jubilee Line, Zone 2) and then the ... ...open 6 days a week from Tuesday till Sun at 10am till 5pm and has free entry. Once inside you will find rabbits, sheep, chickens, turkeys, cows, pigs, donkeys, nanny goats, ducks, geese and bees. The animals are all healthy and well kept. There is also a very reasonably priced cosy cafe, which is very family friendly. Disabled toilets are also provided. Don't tell the kids that what they may eat inside the cafe could have come from the farm itself! ...

The funereal splendour of Victorian London
Advantages: Peaceful and scenic location, chock full of beauty and social history! Disadvantages: Not the easiest place to get to, surrounding area a little run down
...any grieving families. Nunhead Cemetery (originally 'All Saints'') first opened in 1840 as part of the ongoing need for an expansion of London's burial grounds. It was originally ran by a private company and continued to be used throughout both the first and second World Wars, suffering damage from Luftwaffe bombs during the London blitz. It was eventually abandoned by its owners in 1959 and was purchased later by Southwark Council for the bargain ... ...such as the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery), much of the cemetery is effectively in disrepair having been effectively absorbed by the dense woodland that overtook the site during the years when it was neglected. This is what gives it its unique charm. It is a beautiful, green wilderness where crumbling ruins, ornate Victorian grave sites and an air of mystery provide an unparalleled shadowy gothic charm. Location and getting there The cemetery ...

Goldfinger: He's the man with the modernist ouch!
Advantages: fascinatng piece of 20th century architechture Disadvantages: few facilities, not of interenst to children
...childhood homes of the Beatless. 2 Willow Road in London's leafiest area hampstead certainly is not the stereotyped National Trust property. 2 Willow Road was built by the Hungarian Architect Erno Goldfinger (yes here is some connection between him and the James bond film. Apparently Ian Fleming sent Goldfinger first edition copies of the book) in 1939 and is one a fine example of Modernist architecture. 2 Willow Road was home to the Goldfinger family ... ...it. My first impressions of 2 Willow Road was that it was a smell block of low rise flats that looked very modest compared to the grand Victorian villas and pretty cottages that surround it. However this did not put me off going in once I reallied that this unassuming building was the right property. Its based on a reinforced concrete structure with huge windows to let the light in. Hampstead is all hills and Willow Road is no exception. Thus the ...

A breath of fresh air in south London
Advantages: One of the nicest and most varied in the locality, a nice cafe, Disadvantages: open to the adjoining golf course in parts (for dog walkers)
...how I first heard about High Elms Country Park.
Not too far from home, but I probably wouldn’t bother travelling there if it weren’t for the opportunity to take my dog somewhere different every so often. Situated in the London Borough of Bromley and by the North Downs, it was originally the country seat of the Lubbock family. It’s now owned by Bromley Council, although it receives some assistance from the Countryside Agency, Forestry Authority and ... ...(Bromley Environmental Education Centre at High Elms) which is a newly-built sustainable education and visitor centre. It also houses two large multi-functional rooms for use by community groups, local businesses and schools although we‘ve never ventured inside.
My favourite part though has to be the attached café. Called the Green Roof café, we invariably stop here after our walk. The café gets its name from the eco-friendly sedum growing on the ...

Temple Church: A Curious Congregation of Knights and Lawyers
Advantages: Excellent original features. Beautiful interior restoration. Disadvantages: Variable opening hours
...been fascinated by knights, especially the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, or the Knights Templar as they are more colloquially known. Their white mantle with the blood red cross emblazoned on it inspired childhood daydreams of glorious battles, war horses and many a damsel saved from distress. Of course, in those days, I didn’t really know much about their past. That, and the fascination that arose from it, was down ... ...who opened my eyes to the rich and chequered history of one of the most important and amazing military organisations the world has ever known. Then Dan Brown came along and popularised the Grail legend in “The Da Vinci Code”, and all of a sudden, a whole cottage industry sprang up tracing the fictional Robert Langdon’s breathless dash across London on so-called Da Vinci Tours. One of the most popular stops on that tour is Temple Church, and for a ...
