Design Museum Butlers Wharf, nr. Tower Bridge.
We visited the Design Museum with high hopes for rows and rows of our favourite design classics from egg-timers to cars. Initial impressions are good; a modern building overlooking the Thames near Tower Bridge. We had a coffee and browsed in the shop which has some contemporary design classics for sale at high-street prices. The rest of the museum visit however was a short let-down. There are basically just two viewing galleries - one for temporary exhibitions and a more permanent collection housed on the top floor.
The latter, however, is more just a small collection of themed 'design classics' eg. televisions, cameras, kitchen utensils etc. These were nicley presented in large glass housing. What the museum appears to lack is space - the whole visit was over in under an hour and there are no areas for information on the background of product design. We were not alone in trying doors not accesible to the public thinking there must be more to the museum.
Overall although we enjoyed the building, its location and facilites but the small number of exhibits cannot jusitfy the £5.50 admission price (correct as of August 2000).
