This year we decide to visit London as a family break and to keep the costs down we thought that we would go in our caravan.
We stopped at the caravan club site near Crystal Palace, the site is excellent and very clean and tidy and suprisingly not that difficult or time consuming to actually get to the city centre.
You can purchase travel cards from the club site I would suggest a family travel card for zones 1-4 this will cover 95% of the sightseeing places in London. If the site doesn't have any then there is a papershop a 5 minute walk away that also sells them.
From the site it is just a few minutes walk to be able to catch the No.3 bus which will take you directly to Oxford Circus (buses run about every 15mins) or as an alternative as we did you can catch this bus to Brixton tube station and then take the underground into London (Children prefered to go on the tube).
Once into London there is so much to see and do from watching Changing of the Guard, to shopping at Harrods and Hamley's (a must for the kids!) another suprisingly enjoyable experience was going to Portabelo street market, the market was never ending and had everything from modern day market stalls to the more unusuall antiques and collectors items. The market is only on, on a Saturday I think.
Other great things to do as a family are the London eye - superb views of London, the museums which are all free, the kids especially enjoyed the science musuem. Covent garden is a great experience for both adults and children as is Madame Tussards.
As everyone knows London is a huge city to get around even with it's great underground network and bus network to get to see all the sites of London is difficult therefore I strongly recomend that you go on a bus tour of London. We went on the Big Bus Company tour, it was £48 for a family of four but was the best thing we did on the whole break. The tour from start to finish is about 21/2 hours but you can hop on and off as you like over a 24hour period. We decided to stop on and take the full tour this was excellent very informative from the tour guides who accompany these buses and covered all of the best sightseeing places of London. Also included in the price is a boat trip on the River Thames.
In my opinion the bus trip is a must for all visitors to London.
London is a great busy, bustling City with lots of things to do for young and old nobody will be bored and with kids that is a releif and what a way to do it in your own caravan.
The cost for our 4 day stop was about £90 for a family of 4 - most hotels want that per person per night!
Don't take my word for it go and visit London everyone should and my family will certainly be going back soon.
