None of my reviews is really meant to stand alone. This is the third of a trilogy of London reviews I've written. Now I am in the City of London,a square mile located, confusingly, in the City of London. The square mile could seceed and declare itself a republic. It practically has its own government. That could be so exciting but this is now the tamest part of London.
The Irish republicans put a lorry bomb in Liverpool Street and since then it has a lot of baby monitors and state nannies all over the place. You might visit the bloody Tower, but it is so clean and spruce today, you wouldn't want to make it untidy by beheading anybody there. This is a stuffy little island in a stuffy little island To be honest, people have been messing with the exciting seediness of this area from way back. Upstanding Methodists formed Missions in Victorian times, to bring back the drunks and pros into the arms of middleclassness. Go back further still and you could go the Aldgate and find the endearingly named Groppeconte Lane. I wonder what went on there? Nowadays, nothing. It is an anonymous cut between two glass and concrete monstrosities, and a killjoy has changed the name to Leman Street.
There's the Bank of England, countless museums, St Paul's, the Barbican Arts Centre, but the very best thing about this area is the London Wall. Bits of old wall built when the Romans were in charge. The Corporation of London has planted them with rock gardens and benches, and it is a surprise and delight to come upon one of these little havens. I'd sit and drink a huge tea from Bengy's and read my Metro newspaper, but I can't get rid of this feeling someones's watching me.
You can't blame them, I suppose. It's where the money's kept.
