By far the cheapest form of transport in London is with a Travelcard. These can be used on any London Transport bus and tube in their respective zones. They can be bought for
Zones 1-2 (central London) Zones 1-4 (what you'll usually need) Zones 2-6 (can't be used in the centre) Zones 1-6 (total use of tube and buses)
There are also One Day Children’s Travelcards (aged 5-15) for Zones 1-6, though those aged 14 and 15 need a Child Rate Photocard to qualify. There are also weekend, weekly, monthly and annual Travelcards available.
If you wish to travel outside the zone for which you have bought a Travelcard (eg. you have a Zone 1-4 card and wish to go to Heathrow in Zone 6), you need to buy a Zone Extension ticket. These tell the ticket machine at your destination that you have paid to be in that zone. It therefore pays to plan ahead and buy the correct Travelcard.
