A trip on the London Eye was my boyfriend's treat to me for our 7th anniversary - how romantic!
On the ticket you are advised to turn up an hour before 'departure', and when we arrived, you could see why. The queues are hundreds of people long! We thought perhaps we wouldn't even make it to the front on time.
However, the line of people moves forward quickly, and there are stewards all along the way. Despite that, I wonder if perhaps it's quite easy to queue-jump.
So after an hour of queuing we were finally at the foot of the Eye. You are ushered into a room in groups of 16 or so (however many it was per pod) to have your photo taken. I kind of resented this - it wasn't like you had any choice. I thought at first it was some sort of security measure but then realised on the way out that it's so they can try to sell you a digital composite photo of you 'on the Eye'. Faking it seems a bit ridiculous, but I guess tourists will buy anything when they're having fun.
It took something like 45 minutes to make a full revolution, and for more than half of that time you can't really see much of anything, except the view you'd have from the ground. But for the 15-20 minutes when there's the views across London it is really quite spectacular.
We were lucky because it was a clear evening, we timed it to catch the sunset, so it was really beautiful. As Londoners, we were fortunate to be able to recognise the districts of the city. I felt that an in-pod commentary or map would have been helpful for those who were less familiar with the landscape.
The seating in the centre of the pod is useful for those who feel vulnerable that high up. It is extremely vertiginous - has some of the appeal of a fairground ride, even though it rotates so slowly.
In all, I felt it was pretty good value. The best views were of the nearest architecture - Westminster and the MI5 buildings - where you can make out the interior squares that you'd never be aware of from ground level. And it was also quite surprising how soon the urban landscape becomes rolling hills in the distance - to the east in particular.
I suspect the access for disabled (wheelchair users and slower movers) is a bit limited because the wheel is constantly turning so you have to hop in quick when your pod becomes available.
