Arriving back at Heathrow at 8am from Orlando via Chicago I thought I had landed in a third world airport. After disembarking from our American Airlines flight in T3 we had to walk from the furthest gate from immigration, about a 10 min walk with 2 kids in tow, before we were able to find a toilet. This facility smelt as if it had not seen a cleaner for days. Was this the welcome visitors to our country wished for after a long flight. Going through immigration, our passports received only a cursory glance. My main worry here was not tripping up over the tatty and well worn carpet. Collecting bags involved the usual finding the right carousel followed by a scrum to get your bags off. Customs officials - are there any employed at Heathrow? I believe BAA are in the process of renovating parts of the airport as there are hoardings everywhere in the departures area with shops selling the usual brand name goods, however, from stepping off the plane to returning to the car I was apalled at the impression Heathrow T3 must give to a first time visitor to the UK. It has to be the worst airport I have had the pleasure of using. Gatwick is far superior.
