Celebrating twenty-one years of marriage we decided to visit London (one of my favourite places), and this time decided to stay the side of London we weren’t so familiar with near Regents park. Checking online we picked the Marriotthotel Regents Park. Set in King Henry’s Road NW3 the hotel contains 303 rooms set on seven floors. Each room the hotel boats has air-conditioning, & balcony.
Arriving two hours prior to our agreed check in time we were pleasantly surprised to find our room was available. Travelling by lift to the fourth floor, we soon found our room. Entering the room you are faced with a decent sized room with two double beds, two arm chairs, a writing table (along with chair) and of course the obligatory TV and drawers/wardrobe.
Our first impressions of the room and the hotel were generally very good; the reception staff had proved very polite and helpful. The room was spotless, everything seemed to shine.
We paid about
£390 for our four night stay (2 people), through Superbreak.com, however on the hotels web site at http://www.marriott.co.uk/Channels/Marriott+Global/UK/FindReserve/properties/countries/uk/lonrp.asp it would have cost us about £540 based on the prices at time of booking, a difference of some £150 for booking through a third party?
The bath was slightly narrow, and as someone who has mobility problems, I found the bathroom unacceptably small, though it was totally spotless and I had no qualms about getting in the bath, unlike some hotels I’ve stayed at.
Breakfast was served between 6.30 and 11 am week days and Sunday 7 am to 11 am. Breakfast was plentiful, though I must admit the toaster proved a problem for me and I needed help.
**Things I liked about the Marriott hotel in Regents Park:
The cleanliness of the hotel was superb, the floors shone the carpets spotless and the cutlery glistened. The staff were obviously well trained and was exceptionally polite and helpful. The concierge took time to explain the directions to the nearby Zoo. He felt like a friend, easy to talk to and knowledgeable. The hotel also has a well stocked mini shop, which sells souvenirs of London, postcards, stamps, sweets and crisps, and cigarettes. Breakfast, I love breakfast and this was a nice enough breakfast which offered a choice of cereal, fruit, toast, croissants, hams and cheese and of course the typical English breakfast. The room contains a good selection of tea and coffee (not to mention hot chocolate). However as many of you may know I am a tea addict, so the two tea bags and four milk simply weren’t enough. A little note to the cleaner soon remedied that and I got double portions form then on – no quibble.
**Things I wasn’t struck on at the Marriott Hotel in Regents Park:
The bath was too narrow, and the bathroom full stop was on the small size. Our room was at the back of the hotel and the noise from the traffic – although not too disruptive was a bit noisy at times. Business men, the hotel seemed to be full of business men who seemed to always be there, wherever you went. The mini bar was a joke too: You simply had to touch something in the mini-bar and you were charged for it. I removed a small two items before reading the hidden sign, warning that everything was monitored. Needless to say a day later my bill was up to £4.80 for mini-bar goods, which in fact I hadn’t taken – but replaced. However it was soon sorted when I mentioned it to reception. Mini-bar prices were well over exaggerated even by London standards: Can of Pepsi = £2.60: Small tube of Pringles = £1.75; Bar of chocolate = £3.60.
Disabled access: Wheelchair users are welcomed and though I’m not sure they have any specifically disabled rooms. Our bathroom would have been totally unacceptable if I had been totally wheelchair reliant. There are two slopes at either end of the hotel for wheelchairs, pushchairs etc. However when our taxi pulled up outside the hotel we found ourselves facing-three-steps-which luckily I could climb. The lifts were amply big enough to accommodate a wheelchair, plus further passengers. However overall I don’t think this hotel would be suitable for a totally wheelchair reliant person.
Out and about:
The hotel says: “the Swiss Cottage tube station is adjacent to the hotel” – not strictly true – it is about a five minute walk.
The hotel says: “Just a few minutes from local attractions like Lords Cricket Ground, the London Zoo, Madame Tussauds this hotel is perfect for any occasion” The concierge informed us that it was in fact a fifteen minute walk to Regents Park, and the zoo. Everything else was advised to travel by tube. (Other visitor attractions include: Buckingham Palace (4 mi) Camden Market (1.5 mi) Financial District (3 mi) London Eye (5 mi) London Zoo/Regents Park (0.4 mi) Madam Tussauds (1 mi) Oxford Street/Bond Street (3 mi) Theatre District (3 mi) Wembley Stadium (6 mi))
Swiss cottage high street is typical of any high street, nothing too exciting though they do have two cinemas (Odeon and Warner’s), Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, KFC, and Marks and Spencer’s simply food.
Walking to Regents Park you will pass through ‘Primrose hill’, which has a great view of London from the top. There are also many dogs taking their strolls in this park, and I got the impression that Pongo and Perditta (101 Dalmatians) had been here before!
Recommended for those able to walk at least some steps
Not recommended for wheelchair bound persons

Heavy discounts for booking through third parties is extremely commonplace in the hotel market - and how I have managed to stay in some superb hotels quite often for discounts well over 60% - including one as low a £27 B&B. I stayed at the Marriott Heathrow for £60 booked through Superbreak - on the Marriott website it would have set me back well over £100.
