London...Where does it start? where does it end? More so where is its centre?
London is a great city but one that is very confusing as to a tourist which way is up-town and which is down-town.London does not appear to have any boundary.The life style here is very different to many countries capitals.
London is a service city,shop-counter and a show-case all rolled into one.It has a sprinkling of glass towers,housing many multi-national people.A density of population at over 11,000 residents to the square mile.
London once did have walls and a part of this can be seen near the home of the big banks down by the river(near to the stock exchange,also fleet street area).The church spires still stand tall,but alongside them you will find the newer buildings.A sort of patchwork.
During the eighteenth,nineteenth and early part of this century, London expanded greatly. What was once open field ,market gardens or commons,with maybe the odd farmhouse or barn soon became overwhelmed with houses. These were the suburbs of london. A comercialised London had begun a city that has no walls..
So what can I tell you about London now?
Well London is a very busy place. The transport system is good but hetic with many buses,trains,coaches and river trips, in and out of the area.Black taxi cabs are plenty but a bit expensive.There are museums and art galleries a famous one being madame Tussaud's, another the national gallery. There are many many more. Lots of places of interest: Covent Gardens,Kew,Buckingham palace,Tower of London. All are easy to find and get too. A good tourist attraction could be the changing of the guards.London even has a Zoo and sports so there are many things to do.
One of the reasons many come to London is the array of shops in the area.Oxford street ,Bond street and Regent street being the busy ones. The shop selection ranging in prices from cheap to very expensive. It is here you will find Selfridges,Debenhams,Littlewoods,British Home Stores,Etam,Dorothy perkins, Mothercare,Burtons. The strange thing with London is you will also find those cheap market type of shops selling jeans,bags and fashion clothes at cheaper prices too.
Accomodation in the London area can range from high class expensive hotels to youth hostels(In very great demand because of cheapness).Contact the English tourist boards for good list.
What about the food and entertainment?
There are many outlets and some are rip-offs with very high prices for say a can of coke. at £2!!. But there are also plenty lower priced outlets and street sellers offering the same for about 50p. Transport cafes although not very attractive, are good for cheap meals here, or inside some of the stores like littlewoods.
The shows well these can be booked in advance and there are lots of good ones to chose from about 70 theatres in london and suburbs with more being built. You have famous music halls,opera houses,etc too. A useful guide to get is the what's on in London sold weekly and found at most bookstalls.
If you do get lost in the maze of London then the best people to ask for direction are the police or traffic wardens,the post offices or shop keeepers are helpful most times.Of course an a-z map is a very handy device.
There is lots of history to be found in London,and as said plenty to do so enjoy your trip here. It may be hetic but often fun.
