Incredible! When I was packing my suitcase for a trip to London I had few visions of this city: many people, noise and mud! But I had to ascertain that it isn´t like in my "horror-visions" - I have never visited a city like London: warm, friendly and the cleanest I´ve ever seen!
Of course there were more people than in our german cities or villages; surely it´s the capital of the United Kingdom. But although there was many people, everyone of them was friendly and was (for example) able to told me the way. During the week I stayed in London I have never seen any rubbish or mud on the streets. (Not like here in Germany; here it looks worse.) The noise was not like the one I imagine, just at Piccadilly Circus it is a little bit louder (caused by the heavy traffic).
The inducement to travel to the UK was that my class gratuaded the last year my old school. I was not happy
when I heard that our teacher planned each minute of our voyage. Every day from the morning to the late evening watched by an 50yr-old man whose profession is to teach chemical-technology!? NO! We were able to persuade him to let us go alone through this big city.
When we arrived all the hungry student ran out of the bus without taking their suitcases with them. Our rooms were in a youthhostel in Whitechapel. And: I prefer a more comfortable hotel in the city, the next time when I visit London. After my friends and I had carried our bags into the 2nd floor of our "youthhostel" the first we did was to take the next tube to London Centrum. There we eat something and began our tour through London:
It was important for us to take a little bit of the british culture back to Germany. But first we had to see the worldfamous sights of London; like every tourist. ;-)... Our stations:
- of course Buckingham Palace (worth seeing, -> changing of the guards, but too many of photographing tourists!)
- Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament (very interesting, the bells sounds one time an hour)
- Picadilly Circus is the big meeting point in London ("See you in 15min at Picadilly!" - worth seeing: the big well with its eros)
- Downing Street No. 10 (here lives Tony Blair, but a lot of security men and the famous bobbies)
- Hyde Park (I don´t know how long I´ve stayed there...)
- Kew Garden (not in the city, second highlight, huge conservatories from the 19th century)
- Greewhich (a very difficult place for a german like me - We speak "greenwhich" with a "W", you can imagine the comments from the english visitors. But now I spoke it correct! ;-))
- Chinatown (funny, I thought I´ve been beamed away!)
- and of course the river Thames (special for long walks in the moonlight... ;-)
Mhhh... yes, that were the most imprtant "sights" of London. But without secret tips you can´t visit a city. Museums, theatres or a musical have to been visited by a stay in the capital! The "Odeon" for example is one of the original old-fashioned cinemas no one of hightech-IMAX-super-cinemas. Or the famous London Palladium, where the Beatles made their last video. There I´ve visited the musical "Saturday Night Fever" - Great!
At the evening you should go to an old english pub. But: You mustn´t enter until you are 18, like me in 1999! ;-( But you can go to one of the thousands of restaurants: Beginning with french quisine to the ordinary hamburger at Burger King!
I´ve also visited the old Wembley-stadium. On a day with the greatest rainfall I´ve ever seen, a british thunderstorm - very funny! :-( But we were able to take the tube bacj in the city. And: The tube is the most important think for a tourists like us.
1. We can´t drive on the wrong (the left) site of the street with our cars... ;-)) 2. For people who have no map of London in their brain, it´s the easiest thing to take the tube.
But all in all I must say that my trip to London was great! I think you will find new things every day, even if you are living there. And one thing I´ll do again: VISITING LONDON!!!
