Advantages: wonderful architecture and culture Disadvantages: just a long way away
...Yes, China really does welcome you. I have just returned from a long holiday in China and Beijing was my starting point. What a clean city and what nice people. Hotels were much better than expected and the food was a little different than we are used to but it was always hot with plenty of fresh vegetables. No tummy problems here provided you do not drink tapwater.
Beijing. Fabulous. Do not miss the Temple of Heaven, Tian a men square, The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City and much more. Buy your mementoes on the way out not the way in. They will be much cheaper. If you cannot buy something for half price you have not haggled enough....

Advantages: Cheap, friendly people, lots to see and do, variety of food Disadvantages: Polluted air, traffic congestion, new road and hotels being put in, touts selling rubbish
...get to Beijing as soon as possible. I went at the start of 1999. A friend went 5 years earlier. What I saw was not what I expected. The city is changing fast. New roads, large modern hotels (that reach to the sky) are being built at a very quick rate. The old Beijing is disappearing under a concrete tide. The traffic has to be seen to be believed, how can such a poor country support som many motor vehicles, a lot of them luxury cars. All this traffic is leading to pollution.
Apart from the above, the famous sites are well worth visiting. You will need at least a full day to see the Forbidden City. A guide book is essential, unless you have you own guide who can explain all the nooks and crannies, as well as the main buildings. Visit this and be amazed.
Beijing is stuffed with ancient sites and is handily placed for visiting sites...

Advantages: Good rooms and beds, 3 restaurants Disadvantages: no pool
...I had the pleasure of staying in this hotel when I travelled to Beijing in July, for a week. This hotel was great. Our rooms were furnished with many accessories such as hair dryers; not that we used them, TV, radio; there was English radio there, air conditioning, thank god, a mini bar and a safe. There were three restaurants in the hotel, and a massage parlour and a beauty salon. One disadvantage was there was no pool. But the views were excellent, since it was in the middle of the city, one thing that did restrict the views was pollution, not that a lot but still, but that was nothing to do with the hotel! It was situated near many western restaurants (in case you get sick of Chinese food) and the people at the desk will ring up and order pizza for you to take to your rooms for no more than it costs to buy! (Usually it costs 15% extra...

I stayed at the Novotel Xinqiao, Beijing during a family trip to China's capital in February 2005. There were 3 of us in our party, and we had reserved 2 superior rooms for 6 nights. The total costs of this stay was a mere £360 (courtesy of ... more

What this book is not is a guidebook to being a mother, good or bad. Although it does tell us how several generations of mothers in the story reacted to events in their family's lives. There often aren't simple right or wrong ways of dealing with a... more
