I am nearing the end of a two week holiday off work. We didn't really have much planned, just to relax. But after a few days we decided we had relaxed enough and decided to take a day out at Longleat Safari Park.

It's not just as simple in jumping in the car as we live on the Isle of Wight. We had to book a ferry and try to get it at a cheap price. The cheapest we could get was £30 for a day return from Yarmouth to Limington.

The Ferry takes half and hour to cross the Solent and from Limington it is a fairly straight forward drive getting up to Longleat. We headed towards Salisbury as we have been there several times and know that Longleat is just outside and very well signposted from Salisbury.

Background on Longleat.
-------------------------------

Some people might recognise the name from the TV show all about Longleat House, the animal keepers and Lord Bath himself.

Longleat house was built in 1580 and is considered one of the best examples of Elizabethan architecture. The house, gardens and safari park have been open to the public since 1966.

Longleat was the first Safari park to be opened outside of Africa. With 8,000 acres of lakes and woodland no wonder it was voted "Family attraction of the year 2002".

On arriving at Longleat we decided to drive around the Safari park before going into the house and grounds which holds many of the other tourist attractions there. I will tell you a bit about each of the attractions:

The Safari Park Drive through!
-------------------------------------

On entering the Safari park you are able to purchase your entry into the Safari alone or a "passport ticket" as it is called which gives you access into all the attractions for that day. We bought the passport and this cost us £18 each (that's for an adult passport, it's £14 for a child's/OAP's and you can just pay to go round the safari for £10 adult or £7 child/OAP's). We received our tickets along with a site map and an audio CD to listen to for when we drove around.

You obviously need a car to be able to drive around but a bus is available for people who arrive without a car. They do specify that motor cycles and soft top cars are not allowed to enter the Safari Drive through. There is also a warning when entering the monkey enclosure do to car damage but they let you know you can bypass this section if you are worried about how much damage will be done to your car.

Ok so the first section you enter is the African reserve which houses the zebras, ostriches, giraffes and camels. The audio CD is fairly helpful to play as you go around but did get quite annoying so we did turn this off pretty much straight away. In this section there is a cafe and picnic area where quite a lot of people were sitting eating lunch with the giraffes! We had to press on to fit everything in.

Coming out of that enclosure into the next, you see the flamingos chilling in a little lake and follow the road round into the monkey field. The monkeys were everywhere and so were the remains of various cars windscreen wipers. I drove in with some caution as I didn't fancy running one over or being ambushed by a group! They looked so cute and we stopped to watch a couple of babies play fight. As we drove on we were blocked in by other cars which were covered in monkeys! All of a sudden, three were on the car staring at us, they then proceeded to chew on my screen wash dispensers, sit on my wing mirrors and rip the rubber off my back wiper!!! Other cars had a lot more damage so I think we got off lightly.

The lion and tiger enclosures were to follow and all the windows had to be done up for driving through these sections so it was pretty hot in the car and as we drove in to the first tiger section we hunted out the hiding tigers. There was a very beautiful and apparently fairly rare white tiger in the field but it was far away from the road sleeping, so we didn't really get a good look. One other tiger did walk out in front of our car and gave us the evil eye! But apart from that they seemed to be pretty happy laying in the sun!.

We were in the second enclose which houses the Lions quicker than we thought due to the docile animals and this field was not much better. All the lions in the pack were chilling out sleeping. We sat there for 10 minutes but they didn't really move much so we decided to head to the house and see the other attractions.

All in all the drive through wasn't that great. A lot of the animals weren't really doing much, I expect the best time to go is feeding time but last entries to the Safari at this time of year are 4 o clock. We did enjoy it though but thought it could have been a little better.

Longleat House & Grounds
----------------------------------

We are not usually people who like looking round old houses as it just isn't really our sort of thing, but we couldn't come here and not have a quick look around.

The main building itself is pretty large 13th century building which houses a lot of antiques and portraits. I can't really comment on a lot of the bits inside as I don't know a lot about antiques etc. There are a lot of pretty rooms and it is certainly worth a look.

There are certain parts of the house which you are not allowed to look around but there are lots of staff to show you which direction to go and also to answer any questions you may have. I did find the staff very helpful. There are around 8 rooms you can walk through and they are: ~The Great Hall, The Red Library, the Lower Dining room, the State Dining room, the Saloon, The state Drawing room, The Dress corridor and finally the grand staircase.

There is also a couple of gift shops and cafe's inside the house where you can by the usual postcards and baguettes.

Grounds & Gardens
------------------------

All the gardens are exceptionally well maintained and really very beautiful to wander through. The sheer expanse of the place is breathtaking and there are some very pretty views of the surrounding area. A Lot of gardeners are working all over the grounds and you can see that a lot of effort goes into the overall look of the place.

Adventure Castle & Blue Peter Maze
-------------------------------------------

This attraction is strictly for children so we didn't go into this but it did look impressive for the children. As it is a large wooden castle with the usual mazes, rope ladders and climbing frames. You cant really see a lot from the outside but it does look big.

Butterfly Garden
---------------------

Unfortunately we didn't have time for this and my other half wasn't too keen on taking a look anyway. But it does hold hundreds of rare butterflies and is meant to be worth seeing.

Old Joe's Mine
-------------

Again we didn't have much time for this attraction and the other half wasn't too keen (he's getting boring in his old age) but I probably wouldn't have liked it anyway as its pretty much in the dark and home to a good number of BATS!

Longleat Railway
----------------------

Now we managed to catch this train as there are certain times that it departs through out the day. There is a 4 o clock one which we caught (meaning we missed the parrot show in pets corner), and to be brutally honest we weren't impressed. The train itself was very cute but it took you through what looked like a building site at first and then through some woods (all not very interesting!). It did end up coming back over the lake with the seals in but you couldn't see any seals from the train.

Motion Simulator
---------------------

There are two motion simulators and you passport only allows you to go on one of the two (you can decide which one). Ag ain we didn't have enough time to queue up to go one them so we headed instead to....

Pets Corner
--------------

There are a lot of different breeds of rabbits in this sections and you are allowed to pick them up and pets them. We also saw a colony of red ants and a collection of rather large and hairy spiders( no petting allowed!) They also do a parrot show through out the day at various times which I heard is really good.

Postman Pat Village
-------------------------

Again this section of Longleat is only for 14's and under (but adults can go in with their children) so we were not able to go in. This is one of the most popular attractions at Longleat

Safari Boats
----------------

This was my absolute favourite part of the day. We didn't have to queue long to get onto one of the Safari boats which go out into the main Lake which is home to the Seals (sea lions), Hippo's and Gorilla island. The boats leave every 10 minutes and the trips are only 10 minutes long. As you leave on the boat the seals follow the boat along and jump out of the water. They really come up close especially when you are able to buy some fish (50p) to feed them! They loved it! The hippo's were, as a lot of the other animals, just chilling in the depths of the water but we did manage to see a big yawn! You get to stop alongside gorilla island and have a look at the two residents that are strolling around. They looked so funny just like out of Planet of the Apes!.

Longleat Hedge Maze
--------------------------

Now I will confess to something quite embarrassing! A main reason we didn't have time to go on some of the attritions was that I got lost in the maze! My boyfriend and I went in together and he thought it would be funny to run off and let me chase him. Well it was funny at first but after I lost him and couldn't hear his shouts anymore I started to get frustrated. The maze is really quite big and the hedges are really high. He was out in no time and called me to see where is was. I had already been in there 30 minutes and wasn't getting anywhere (except back to where I came from!) I started to get really stressed (added with the fact you cant smoke in the maze I was getting really irate!) Another 20 minutes passed with me walking round in circles and getting angrier by the second and I decided I need to have a cigarette (hoping they will see the smoke and come in to reprimand me and take me out of this torturous place!) No such luck, no one came but I felt a lot calmer. Another 30 minutes passed and I hear my boyfriend calling me. He had to drag me through a bush to get me on the right course! Otherwise I would have never got out! There are apparently boards that you can lift if you are lost that give you directions but I only saw them around the exit! Typical.

That was our last attraction before we went home and I was exhausted! By 5 o clock all of the cafe's had closed and everyone was on their way home so we trudged back off to the car.

Overall
------------

Looking back on our day at Longleat we did actually have a really nice day, (somewhat expensive though).
All the attractions we went on were in good order and a lot of fun (minus the train).

I would probably not go again at least not for a few years but I would certainly recommend to anyone else to go for a day trip there. There is so much to do I only wish we got there earlier (but it would have cost more on the ferry).

I would say that there are really no downsides to this Safari park and house, its a reasonable price for the amount of things that you are able to see and do. It would be even more fun I think if we went with kids as we could go on the other attracts (big kid at heart). So overall I would say 9/10 for Longleat Safari park and House.

Nice Review, I love Longleat myself, although I personally think that it is a 2 Day thing rather than just one day. There is too much to do in just one day for me. The Maze is excellent - but really hard and the I also loved the seals. Great Review and thanks. Have a good day. JPEG
