California is a state like no other in the US. Once you are in California make no mistake, it is broken into two completely different halves. The first time I heard the term No-Cal I assumed the California sales staff was talking about yet another Hollywood diet plan. No-Cal is the northern California area and is dominated by the Bay Area which contains San Francisco and Oakland. So-Cal is Southern California and consists of Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego area. This is the area where I spend a great deal of my time when in California, especially the LA area.

Getting There
If you are flying from another destination in the US there is a myriad of airports to choose from. The largest airport is Los Angeles International Airport which is usually referred to as LAX. You can also fly into the Long Beach Airport or Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport. I fly to these two often as they are usually significantly cheaper than LAX. Long Beach Airport is always fun because it reminds me of the LA of old. It has not been updated since the 50’s and you still come down the rolling staircase onto the tarmac instead of using a jet-bridge like all modern airports.

Lodging
It does not matter where you stay in the city, each area has its advantages. I do not suggest you stay too close to LAX as the hotels are rather expensive and there is a lot of traffic and airport noise. You should also plan on renting a car. LA is too vast to take on by foot and though I suppose you could use public transport; my one experience with it was not a pleasant one.

Things to See
As I am usually in LA on business, I don’t get to play tourist very often. I did get to fly my wife out with me on one occasion and we spent the weekend playing tourist. Here are a few of the many things that you can do in LA.

Hollywood Bowl – This old amphitheatre was has been featured in many Hollywood films and is set in a lovely part of town. There is usually a good summer concert series and you can purchase tickets at the box office. The box office also has a nice little gift shop where you can buy the typical souvenirs as well as some neat musical trinkets. We picked up a fun little Cuban music CD for us to play as we drove around town.

Mann’s Chinese Theatre – I must say that I was readily disappointed by this famous landmark. For those of you not familiar with Mann’s, this is where Hollywood's superstars come and leave their handprints and footprints in cement. Parking makes this attraction difficult to get to and it does not seem to be a very good neighborhood. We were accosted by three vagrants on our short walk to the theatre. The walk to the theatre is on the famous Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame. It was fun to see whose star you were traipsing over but the theatre seemed a little run down and you can only say “Gosh, Lucille Ball and Cary Grant sure had small hands” so many times. My suggestion is skip this little landmark.

Santa Monica Pier – I am not sure what the intention of this pier was originally but now it serves as a flea market/amusement park/restaurant/street performer venue. Parking can be had fairly close to the pier at a rate for around $6. To get there you walk on one of LA’s famous rollerblading paths which in itself can be entertaining if you are into people watching. Expect some panhandling here as well but also expect to see beautiful men and women in incredible shape displaying their bodies as they jog or rollerblade. Once you reach the pier you find a rich little market where anything from henna tattoos to cheap jewelry can be purchased for a price. Being a big fan of street performers, I was very impressed with the quality of the performers here. Juggling and acrobatics are the most well represented and if you see a small Asian man with cans and a board be sure to stop and watch. There were places to eat but the food seemed rather pricey and smelled rather greasy so we skipped the food.

Rodeo Drive – I am sure this is the most common used description by tourists but this sure seemed a lot smaller than I imagined. Rodeo probably consists of no more than thirty stores. Most are the usual players that you would expect like Gucci and Chanel but there are also some neat little boutiques. My wife and I stopped at Martin Lawrence Galleries and were blown away. Our salesman was quite attentive though we were dressed in shorts and polo shirts. They had lots of limited edition serigraphs and lithographs by artists like Picasso, Chagall and Warhol. I told him that I had seen an excellent showing of Chagall at the Art Institute of Chicago when I was visiting there and he proceeded to lead us to a “private viewing” room where they had an assortment of original Chagalls and Picassos. He told me that he could arrange for other artists to be shipped to us and “isn’t this Chagall lovely and it is quite a steal at $250,000, would you like some champagne?” So this is how the other half lives.

Solvang – Okay, this is not technically in LA. Ojai is a charming little Dutch settlement about an hour and a half north of LA. To get there you should take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) for as much of the trip as you can. You will be treated to wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean on your left and mountainous hills on your right. There are various vineyards along the way and we stopped at Firestone Vineyards which had a beautiful tasting room and an informative tour guide. The town of Solvang has all the typical Dutch trinkets for purchase at the various gift stores but also boasts some neat little shops where non-tourist wares can be purchased. There is also a wonderful assortment of Dutch bakeries and restaurants in the town, we sampled the pastries and they were truly decadent.

This is a short list of the many things you can see. Other suggestions are catching a basketball game at Staples Center where you can spot your favorite celebrity. Tour the Getty Center which has an enormous art collection; go on a weekday to avoid the traffic. Of course there are the amusement parks like Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.

The Food
Food in California is outstanding. Whether you are a vegetarian or confirmed carnivore most restaurants will be able to satisfy your needs. Californians place a huge emphasis on fresh food since agriculture is second only to entertainment as California’s biggest industry. Never be afraid to ask for items to be cooked the way that you want it and most restaurants have special “off menu” items that those in the know can ask for.

I have found a wide variety of restaurants on Sunset Strip. Most of the restaurants have outdoor dining so that you can watch all the “pretty people” walk on by. I have had everything from Steak Tartare, to sushi, to homemade gnocchi in the various restaurants on Sunset. The only way the restaurants can survive the high price of rent on Sunset is to have good food so most of the restaurants are safe bets. They can be a bit pricey though.

If you want to eat like a true Californian and you get a craving for a good burger make sure to stop by an In-Out Burger. These fast food drive-ins only offer a double meat burger, a hamburger, a cheeseburger, french fries, shakes and soft drinks. Everything is fresh, never frozen and true to California form there is an off menu item. For those of you on the Atkins diet you can get a burger with no bun wrapped in lettuce. Just ask for the protein burger.

The People
The weather in California is nearly perfect and so are many of the people. Many are aided by their local plastic surgeon, personal trainer or cosmetic dentist. What I do admire most about California is that you will find in most places all people are treated with respect and the service level is high. The reason behind this is that Hollywood has made so many millionaires that you are never sure if the person who enters the Mercedes dealership is producer or a beach bum. This makes Californians friendly indeed.

The people tend to be very laid back too which can be frustrating for people wanting to do business with Californians but makes it ideal for vacationers. I constantly have to remind my staff that deadlines are just that, not mere suggestions. I have also had some interesting Human Resources issues as well. Take the salesperson who suggested she was being discriminated against because she was just so much prettier than the other people she worked with. This is normally an issue that I could laugh off but in California anything goes. If you are looking for relaxation, this is the place.

All and all though, the people are a pure pleasure to deal with. Never will you see so many “pretty people” and so many dazzling smiles. I have known plenty of people that have decided to make LA their home because it is as close to Shangri-La as they have found. I guess I just need a few hardships in my life. I am not ready to move but I love to visit.

going to LA on the 14th Feb for 2 and a half weeks but we'll be visiting Vegas aswell. I can't wait. You've given me some ideas of stuff to do in LA but the main thing I want is to see at least one celeb! And the HOllywood hills sign and try and see what goes on at the oscars. - Dunno if we'll be able to get a spot behind the barriers. what do you think? Great review. amy
