Holidaying in Los Angeles

Advantages: Lots of things to see and do, the tours are very good if you like that sort of thing
Disadvantages: not much to do on a night which made me feel safe

I holidayed in Los Angeles for xmas and new year 2007, I stayed in a holiday inn on hollywood bulivard. The Holiday inn was about 10 minutes walk from where the walk of fame is. I must admit it wasnt what i expected, the main tourist areas around the Chinese Theatre and the walk of fame is very dirty and there are rows of adult shops around this area. This was always a place i have wished to visit, and although i went only for a week i do wish i ...
...everything i wanted to see. I really enjoyed doing the trips which showed you celebritys houses and takes you to beverley hills. Taking a look at the shops on rodeo drive is a must, especially to see where pretty woman was filmed. When we went in December the weather wasnt great, although through the day it was pretty warm sometimes but not so that we coould sit on the beach. The local beach to us was santa monica, and i have to admit this is a ...

Los Angeles: Bigger Than Life

Advantages: A World Class City
Disadvantages: Don't try walking, the bus, or light rail

Los Angeles: Bigger Than Life Let me state it right off at the start: I love Los Angeles. It is a great city to visit or to live in … IF you know how to get around, and how to put up with the eccentricities of the place. Getting Around L.A. Originally, Los Angeles was a much smaller city. Long Beach, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Santa Fe Springs….those were all separate towns a long way from L.A. You reached those towns ...
...made a conscious decision: Los Angeles would be a megalopolis connected by a system of freeways…people living in the megalopolis would, of course, be wealthy and every person would own a car. So, during much of the 1950's the streetcar lines were ripped up and freeways laid down. All those small, independent, villages and towns became virtual vassals of Los Angeles. The towns and cities grew together until now, the entire Los Angeles basin is one ...

God bless America? No, God bless the NHS.

Advantages: Geared up for tourism; good weather; good base for exploring
Disadvantages: none during daylight!

...had opted to stay in Santa Monica when I travelled to California on a recent fly-drive. From here, I figured, I could see most of Los Angeles, before heading inland to stay at Anaheim, to meet The Mouse and his friends. Despite it being part of Greater Los Angeles, if you want to stay in LA, where you stay will probably come down to three neighbourhoods: Hollywood (which despite the heritage is really quite down at heel and grubby); Anaheim (to visit ...
...part of the income in Santa Monica itself is based on tourism. Either in the amount of restaurants and cafes and bars there are, and the hotel/motel trade. It strikes me that there isn't really a difference between a hotel and a motel here because from what I saw, they all seem to provide ample parking. We chose to stay at a Days Inn on Santa Monica Boulevard itself as the hotel was reasonably priced but didn't seem tacky from the photos. Broadly ...

Nowhere are there more ways to sit in traffic

Advantages: Many forms of transportation
Disadvantages: Way, way too many cars!

...walking distance. Unfortunatly getting on that line meant 2 or more hours to get anywhere. But that's ok, leaving Long Beach in your car mean tthe same thing! And you better plan on coming back during work hours, or you'd have to pay to park in your own zip code. Ok, I'll tone down the rant for a moment. LA has nearly infinate busses, since the insurance rates are extremely high there (the nation's highest by far) the city is somewhat divided by ...
...a car but since I lived a block from the beach without my own garage, I might as well not have. I could only park it within walking distance during work hours. Their train/subway system is extensive, since this city is so incredibly spread out it is quite impressive how much of the sity it serves. There are different lines (blue, green, red, yellow, and gold) that cover different parts of the city and run late into the night every day. There are ...

Walk of Fame!!

Advantages: Great to see the stars and Hollywood sign
Disadvantages: Only need a fewdays, not safe at night

On my recent round the world trip LA was my first destination, I have always wanted to go to LA and walk down the star studded Hollywood Walk of Fame and this was my perfect opportunity! I spent a week in LA although I would say that is probably too long, you only really need a few days to see the main attractions and it is a good place to visit as part of a road trip in the USA, maybe adding a stop or two in Vegas or San Francisco as well. Being ...
...the Hollywood Boulevard but accommodation is available for all budgets. I was told that unless you have a car it is very hard to get around LA but I have to say thanks to the helpful staff at our hostel we managed just fine by public transport. Trains and buses run daily and are cheap and easy to use as long as you know where you are headed. The main attractions in Hollywood are: Universal Studios (which I have already reviewed in great detail) ...
