Lotte is a major Korean company which has stores, beverage and food businesses and Lotte World combines their central Seoul Department Store with an indoor and outdoor theme park and other facilities such as an ice rink, bowling alley and hotel. It is definitely worth a visit if you have free time in Seoul. I am sure Disney Land/World has better rides but even though Lotte World is a rip-off copy it has a charm all of it's own. The outside section has some very modern, thrilling rides that come close to those in other larger amusement parks but it is the indoor section (the largest indoor amusement park in the world) that I found most intersting. It is a large doom roofed building that seems to have nothing to do with Asia. It is as if Santa's grotto was recreated inside a gutted East European concert hall. The slighlty cheap feel just gives it an extra beauty. There are "ballons" that travel around the edge of the building - you are suspended from the roof and can look down over the three floors of rides, shops and entertainment to the floor where there are frequent parades and performances. Korea has a tough immigration policy but seems to have imported a whole lot of white faces just to give the parade a bit of yankee doodle pazzaz. Korea is very cold in winter. I took the big drop ride you can see in the picture on the 24th December and had a terrible cold for weeks afterwards. The park is mostly geared up for Korean/Asian visitors - there are some maps and announcements in English but this seems more to make it feel like America than to assist western visitors.
The bad news is that parts of the amusement park were closed down due to safety concerns earlier this year. If you are a fan of kitsch and fantasy it is still worth a look even if you don't want to risk the rides.
Lotteworld 2 is being built and will probably be a much more modern world-class affair. Catch the charming old one while you still have the chance.
