A CITY THAT HAS PRETTY MUCH SEEN IT ALL

Advantages: Beauty. Architecture. Churches. People. Tranquility.
Disadvantages: None

...explain to you just where Lübeck is. Many of you will probably have a good idea where Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg or even Cologne are located, but, if a straw poll amongst my friends and colleagues is anything to go by, not a lot of you will have heard of, let alone know where, Lübeck, is situated.

To start with the clue is there in the other German cities mentioned, yes we are in Germany and you get rather warmer with the mention of ...
...south west.

Lübeck is located in the far north of Germany very close to, but not quite on, the Baltic coast. Around fifty miles further north of here and you are out of Germany and into Denmark. Whilst it is not a seaside city, its satellite town of Travemunde is. Having not (yet) visited Travemunde - which is administered by the city of Lübeck - this review will be only about the main city.

A beautiful Hanseatic city

Advantages: Scenery, buildings, location.
Disadvantages: None that I can think of.

...the oldest social institutions of Lübeck (1260) A typical crow-stepped gabled town house Much of the old town has kept a medieval look with old buildings and narrow streets. The town once could only be entered by passing one of four town gates, of which two remain today, the well-known Holstentor (1478) and the Burgtor (1444). The old town centre is dominated by seven church steeples. The oldest ones are the Lübecker Dom (the city's cathedral) and ...
...ports. Museums Lübeck has many smaller museums like the St. Annen Museum, the Behnhaus and the Holstentor. Lübeck Museum of Theatre Puppets is a privately run museum. Waterside attractions are a lightvessel that served Fehmarnbelt and Lisa von Lübeck, a reconstruction of a Hanseatic 15th century caravel. We first headed up towards the shops where there is an eclectic mixture of modern shops and fast food take aways to more individual shops and more ...

Lübeck

Advantages: UNESCO World Heritage Site
Disadvantages: Rain

Lübeck is one of the three North German cities which were famed for their independence from the rest of Germany. They were part of the Hansa League, which grew rich from the North Sea trade. To this day they still retain the title Hansastadt before their names. The other two are Hamburg and Bremen, but I find Lübeck to be the most interesting of all. Like all major German cities Lübeck was extensively bombed during WWII and most of it's beautiful ...
...now through careful restoration is Lübeck regaining the name 'City of the Seven Towers'. Most of the Old Town has been lovingly restored and is worthy of the UNESCO title. Lübeck's best feature is the splendid Gothic brick architecture which can be seen on most of the buildings in the Old Town. Your tour should start with the Holstentor, which was built in the 15th Century and is the symbol of the city it's also a splendid entrance to the city. ...

PIMP MY HOTEL!

Advantages: Hmmm.........
Disadvantages: Just a Few.

. It is located close to some stunning scenery, all of its competitors are located IN that same stunning scenery, it seems that its owners have attempted to create an attraction out of the hotel itself, and in our eyes at least, have failed - miserably. HOW LIKELY AM I / ARE WE, TO USE THIS HOTEL AGAIN? My wife and I are quite unanimous on this: NEVER AGAIN! This is a hotel that we have since alternated between giggling and having nightmares about. Quite weather it was worth 168.70 Euro - around £150 at the then exchange rate - in order to have a story to dine out on I'm not sure. RICHADA'S HOTEL RATING 55 / 100 In order to put that score into some kind of perspective, here are my current hotel rankings - all reviewed and scored using identical criteria: Ringhotel Friederikenhof - Lubeck - Germany - 92% Hotel ...

Review of Landidyll Park Hotel Bad Salzig, Boppard

NEVER JUDGE A HOTEL BY ITS OUTWARD APPEARANCE

Advantages: Price. Food. Service. Comfort. Quiet. Location.
Disadvantages: Looks like an Office Block!

- we actually look forward to returning to the Amber Hotel in Chemnitz. RICHADA'S HOTEL RATING 86 % I am starting to feel that I am on some sort of crusade here, but the Amber Hotel in Chemnitz really highlighted for me just how poor the standards in many English hotels have become. Not only that, but over priced too. We have on two recent occasions paid somewhat more to stay in Lodges in this country, which frankly have been so far below the standards set here that it is pitiful. The very low key Amber thoroughly deserves its place at number two in the table below - behind another, truly exceptional (German) hotel. In order to put that score into some kind of perspective, here are my current hotel rankings - all reviewed and scored using identical criteria: Ringhotel Friederikenhof - Lubeck - Germany - 92% Amber ...

Review of AMBER HOTEL Chemnitz Park, Chemnitz

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PIGS TROTTERS

Advantages: Situation. Food. Ambiance. Service. Value.
Disadvantages: Having to check out!

WHY DID WE BOOK THE RINGHOTEL FRIEDERIKENHOF? We did not actually, in a sense, choose to book this hotel. It just happened to be the venue for a friend's wedding reception. He was marrying a girl from Lubeck in the north of Germany. The invitation arrived at Easter time for the wedding on 5th October. We booked our three night stay immediately upon our receipt, and acceptance, of the invitation, having discovered that it was not exorbitantly expensive, had an en-suite room available for the three nights that we wanted to be there and actually looked rather pleasant on the website. Not knowing Lubek, or indeed northern Germany at all, we did not even make the effort to look at other hotels in the area. The fact that the reception was being held at the Friederikenhof on the Friday meant that if we were staying there I did not need to ...
